I'm starting to tear down my 98 S3T for much needed paint and engine work. Someone accidentally knocked it over this summer severely scratching the right hand side. I need to know what would be the best paint stripper to use on plastic and fiberglass?I was told not to use the commonly available aircraft stripper that you find in the auto parts store because it is harmful to fiberglass resin and plastic. Any ideas or past experience?

I am professional painter. I have worked on a number of my own glass and plastic bike and car bits. Many fairings and a Lotus car etc...

My advice would be not to use any chemical stripers at all. They can get into small voids in the glass and can come back out after you have painted it... causing bubbling and lack of adhesion.

Personally if the paint is sound it would just need sanding. If it's not sound then scraping is best. Do not sand the glass surface back to much or you will break through the gelcoat into the glass that has voids. Means you will get lots of pin holes in your paint.

Hope that helps.
