So I woke up on Oct 2nt and had double vision. After a lot of scans, blood draws, Spinal Tap (not the band) the Docs have determined I had a stroke. A very tiny stroke that damaged the nerve controlling horizontal movement of my left eye. Supposedly, my eye will regain function in 1 to 6 months. Now I have a bad ass pirate patch.
I sneaked the S2T out a week ago and it was weird but OK. My wife has seen my exemplary car driving and gave me the green light to ride. Been riding around today and my confidence is a bit low but its glorious! I am more cautious about the left side of things and I think I will get a stick on wide angle mirror for the left mirror, but I am back in business.
Any other cyclopses out there?

A friend has macular degeneration in his right eye. He still rides. He moves his head side to side quite a bit, says it helps with the lost depth perception.

triman,
I have been driving, riding blind in the left eye for about twenty years. Commercial over the road semis too. That was my occupation. Was one of only eight drivers with a federal vision waiver in the state of arizona. Accident free! You can do it! Your spot mirror on the blind side is right on. I did the same. Saneg makes some fantastic mirrors, a bit pricy
but great prouduct. Just be much more careful.

There is a "cyclops" as you put it in tucson, you can find him in the storm fronts/Arizona/tucson thread.
He rides an S3 pretty damned well for a one eyed guy. He goes by 1eyeart here on badweb.
I've ridden with him on many occasions and you couldn't tell he had a handicap.
Ride on, and I hope you regain full use of that eye.

Not a problem for me, but it is great that most will find a way to deal with a problem that others may deem insurmountable. Extraordinary.

I ended up with quite a few floaters after my accident / head injuries back in '08. Guess the inertia of my head smacking Terra Firma made a few of the eyeball 'tethers' tear free, so now those loose ends float around my vision as blurry spots.

Most annoying with contacts in, but with glasses they aren't as bad.

I also have a dog with one eye. Morgan (as in, Cap'n). Tear-asses around the yard all the time, does great, and an incredible sweetheart. It can be done, just (and you are) take all the precautions you can.

Me? I'd put a big "BLIND" sticker on that side of my helmet, just to mess with people! And mount a white-tip cane in a holster, somewhere on the bike : ) No disrespect intended to those who are legally blind...but hey, it might get cagers to actually pay attention to a motorcycle...

I have amblyopia in my left eye ("lazy eye"). My depth perception isn't very good, especially at night. My right eye is very dominant. Everything out of the left is a blur. It doesn't affect me much. As they told me in the Marines, "well, you've got a perfect shooting eye. That's all you need."

Sometimes in traffic, if the road is angled just right, it's hard to tell which lane has a shorter stack of cars until I'm right behind them. At night, if it's very dark and the stoplights are very bright, it's hard to tell how far they are, again, until I'm getting right up on 'em. Street signs are hard to read from a distance, too, even though my right eye vision is 20/20.

Had my longest ride yesterday, 25mi. Daytime, sunset and some night freeway, with large trucks on my left side!. I just didn't take any chances with lane changes, no problems. The Buells mirrors really suck at night, will see how the spot one works. I will need some practice but it "looks" good.

Probably going to make me a better rider.

Triman,
Google search saeng/ta corp. You will find
just what you are looking for in a spot mirror for cycles there. I spelled it wrong in my last post. Sorry. Luck to you.

Just after I came home from Viet-nam I used to ride with a friend who had been shot in the face and lost half his upper teeth and the right eye .
We had many laughs about his glass eye,he used to put in peoples drinks and all sorts of tricky stuff. One evening we were riding just on twilight when a bat swooped down unexpectedly and clipped him in the good eye,Luckily he managed to come safely to a stop.Hence forth he was known as Bat Eye.
I guess if there is anything to be learned form all that it would be to always wear decent eye protection and that now you have very real limitations, especially at night.

Turn your head right to left and back to scan frequently and widen your field of vision. Keep it moving as you ride. Works great. DAMHIK

I am the aforementioned cyclops, been minus the right eye since toddlerhood. No problems, I have been able to to everything I wanted, just have to adjust and try harder. When I ride my head is on a swivel, I never change lanes without turning my head and looking that way. Don't depend on the mirrors alone. If I can do it anyone can, I also have my scuba certification and learned to fly ultralight aircraft. Its amazing what you can do, when you never had depth perception/binocular vision you learn to adjust.

Got to practice that scanning technique. Good to hear from all you fellow cyclopses. Trying harder is right, its a bit tiring getting used to it. Practice, practice...

Tired is good.

I get tired a LOT, still coping with my head injuries. Little things...aren't so little anymore and it definitely takes a lot more energy. And that's been 3.5 years now...but keep at it. I've started going from tired every day, to being proud of myself every day for making it through another one!

Practice really does make perfect...keep at it : )

You go Rat, one of the difficult things is to stop and rest when you don't want to, my wife helps me there. I ride with all my gear and will pay attention to things like using a heated vest when its cold etc. Riding is a privilege I aim to honor that for the limited time I have.

Sobering is right, I am using my eye protection with a religious fever in my shop.

You know the saying, "do not look into laser with other eye"
