So if anyone has been following my problems around my x1 they would know if blow 2 head gaskets in a week and some other problems.

Well after some research turns out this bike needs a serious rebuild. New pistons one cylinder need bored, it needs a valve job,rings pretty much a whole top end and everything else.

The guy said that for all the parts im looking at about 700 ballpark. If this is the case and i need new pistons and everything are there any kits that would be suggested? i have all winter i figure if im gonna spend 700 i might was well spend 1000 and get a stage 2 kit or something.

I dont know maybe im wrong here, any suggestions on some reasonably priced kits? or should i go a kit at all?

Anthony.

I'm not sure either, but if you find one let me know because I wanna get a little more power, and have something to do over the winter.

NRHS makes great stuff.

Just make sure to match your pistons to your heads - Thunderstorm to Thunderstorm, XB to XB, etc. And don't go too big on cams; make sure to match them to your displacement and your airflow.

I think the kit he bought was from St. Paul Harley, They had stage 1, 2 and 3 kits. The stage 3 kit ($1,500.00) has cams, heads, barrels, pistons, gaskets and all new hardware too, You will have to check to see if they still have them as they were going fast.

Are the NRHS kits 10.5:1 compression? If so, I know what I'm asking Santa for!

I'm not sure how much you're going to gain from 50cc more... It seems to me you'd get more bang for your buck on new/worked heads and cams. Not to mention your bike is EFI and will need to be tuned I'd imagine. That costs money as well.

It all costs money and depending where you live finding some one who can actually map the computer is a pain. Check my profile i had NRHS install there 1250 kit on the bike and then i shipped the bike to California to have it mapped and dynoed. Total top end including stage 2 port and polish, head work and tuning was around $3000.00

My build cost more because i needed new jugs and heads and valves ect. When the rear exhaust valve broke it dropped into the combustion chamber and destroyed the whole top end.

So, any suggestions for cams? As far as porting the heads go, are thunderstorms 1.85?

@xl1200r
Its not that i think i will gain from 50cc more. My bike needs bored and new pistons the heads need redone and a valve job. For what it cost me to do all that i can buy this kit that come with new heads. The 50cc extra is just a bonus. Also my bike is not efi it has a 42mm mikuni carb.

My bike needs fix what im looking for is the cheapest way to fix it and getting the best performance doing so.

That kit doesn't include heads - only cylinders, pistons, rings and gaskets.

If you want to get out cheap, get good used
standard parts have-em bored & refitted

the cylinder heads can be rebuilt
I had cyclerama do mine, very pleased
work is top notch, prices are reasonable..

@xl1200r
thanks for the correction i miss typed.

To have the pistons and stuff redone it would cost almost $700 i live in pittsburgh and that was the best price i could find. If anyone knows anywhere that will redo pistons, bore the cylinders, and machine the heads that wouldnt be to expensive to ship to please let me know. Id like to stay cheap and get the bike fixed but if i can get a kit that has most of what i need for almost the same price i dont mind spending the extra bucks. Maybe im wrong.

Also i couldnt find st. Pauls harley or anything for the kits. Not ebay or anything. A link would be greatly appreciated.

You should buy a Buell chopper, take the engine for your bike and part the remains on a chopper forum.

Question now becomes how far should i bore the cylinders and what brand pistons to buy? flat/dome, what compression ect ect? any opinions? iv never had to do any kind of major work like this so im not an expert so any help is greatly appreciated.

@harleyelf
This is exactly what i needed someone to post thanks!

So this is the kit that i plan to get Stage 2 It has heads, cylinders, upgraded valves, complete engine gasket, pistons and all rings!

but it is around $1350 when said and done.

i could have everything done on the bike for around $800 if i go the cheap route.

The bike is already apart and i would hate do a complete build later in the future i might as well do it now while i need the parts right? But is the extra cost worth it to go to a stage 2 kit?

Wait a minute: you HAVE an X1 already, right? You HAVE those heads and cylinders. Read the description on that "Stage 2 kit":

quote:

(Stock on domestic models, '98 S1W, '98 S3/T and all '99-'02 models

That kit is for somebody with a stock Sportster or a pre-'98 Buell who wants what you already have. It's just new replacement parts, not some super-duper, double-throwdown bitchin' engine kit. I don't think anybody makes anything that will improve your engine, except maybe sheer, cubic inches (and ya' ain't doing much there without boring the engine cases and really going for larger cylinders).

All your bike needs is a bore job and some pistons and maybe to freshen up the heads. Why do you think the heads need to be done anyway?

Find a reputable shop that does head work. Tell them you have Thunderstorm heads and want to have the valves and guides done. Send out the heads and get them back, fresh and ready to install.

The tricky one--IMO--is finding somebody with the proper torque-plate setup to do the bores properly. Somebody on here has to know a reputable shop capable of doing that.

If not, go for a 1250 kit and make sure you get the proper Thunderstorm pistons. It will save you having to get the machine work done and you'll get a more stable, better-sealing cylinder.

CYCLERAMA:
I have had this work done , porting, fresh guides, valves springs etc. they are a sponsor, and do top notch work...

Pammy had an X1 that put 160HP to the back wheel, check them out...

I've been kicking the idea of buying the NRHS 1250 kit and sending my heads to Cyclerama and having them done and then getting new cams. Anyone know the price of Cycleramas head work? I heard them mentioned on here.
