Hi everyone. There is a lot of good info on this site! I picked up a clean 2001 M2L in july with 10k for mileage and love the bike. Couple problems as anything you buy used.I did Fresh oil, primary lube, fuel line, fuel filter, front and rear brake pads. It had sportster plugs in it that i replaced with the correct ones for the m2 and a new uni air filter because it had a nasty original in it. The bike ran smoother and engine quieter. It has a vance and hines muffler on it that has no packing or core in it.....not good i know. what are your opinions on this? Do they sell just the insert and packing? It also starts very very hard on the colder mornings. Its parked for the winter months now but i scored the buell race filter brand new in the package on ebay and plan on buying a jet kit for the new filter along with new intake seals. I do not know if the bike was jetted for the muffler and plan on addressing this in the spring and will be looking for advice on the rejet.

I dial up my idle a little when starting my bike in colder weather, and only use full enrichener for the initial start plus 10-15 seconds. My tuber starts much better than my XB which is quite a bit newer... you might want to try putting the battery on a charger and see if it starts better on a cold morning after float charging all night.

The V&H is a decent pipe if you keep it packed and secure so it doesn't rattle to pieces. It helps smooth out a 3000 rpm flat spot, and is louder than stock, though not too loud (Force, D&D, straight pipe). It doesn't provide much back pressure so doesn't give the best hp increase, most of it is at the top of your rpm range.

If you're going to do your intake seals you may consider waiting to spend money on the jets until you've seen if it needs them. I believe they are stock at 190 or 195/43. changing the slow jet to a 45 or 48 is useful, mine has performed well with the 45 (and a 200 main, but the 45 made a big difference in my low rpm commuter riding). Elevation will factor in there for you.

If it was a bit wheezy even after your tune-up it may need them... It's not hard to get the carb off and just take a look though.

My bike was a pig to start in the winter, starts a lot better with the single fire ignition now tho.

Unless you find a bargain on a jet kit, probably a lot cheaper just to buy a couple jets. Check what number you have now for slow/main, suggest just start with the the next bigger slow jet. If you run over 5 grand rpm a lot, get the next bigger main while you're there. That may be about $8 to $10; doesn't have to be a HD dealer, sometimes local chopper place is cheaper.
Vance & Hines brand packing was on ebay recently for half the price of A S B's generic.

Nhtuber, my Word doc was actually written regarding the Buell race muffler, rather than the V&H. Not sure if the same procedures apply.

I've got a handful of photos from repacking my Vance before I sold it. If you'd like them posted up here just let me know, I've already sized them for a previous thread, or to send them out.

The repack kit, kind of a segmented blanket sort of thing was too long, couldn't get the whole thing to fit into the canister...so I cut it down a bit to make it work.

It was a Bristol Core or some sort of item by that name. Seemed a lot more robust than just stuffing a bunch of packing material down in the like you do with a Supertrapp.

Thanks for the input. The Bike has a new battery in it and i do have a service manual. Still do not know what to think of the muffler. There is no insert? just the cap on the end. Hollow like everything was taken out. Should there be a baffle that the packing goes around?

There should be a perforated tube through the middle of it. The V&H don't hold up well without all their parts, the vibes just rattle them to pieces. You should be able to get the core for not too much money.

I'll put a couple pictures up here in the morning when I get home from work.

I have a V&H pipe I'm willing to part with. It was just repacked 2000k miles ago. It did crack but was welded so it's not perfect but it works!

First image is my core tacked back together, second shows the guts and how the end of the core had broken off, presumably due to vibration. I'm fairly certain you can buy just a core if you want to.

Blanket was too long, so I trimmed it with some scissors, it left some filaments trying to get loose but once it was closed up everything was so snug I couldn't see anything getting away.

It was a really tight fit, stuffing it halfway was okay, but the blanket will bunch up.









Then I had to put ALL my weight on it to finish stuffing the thing down to the end cap. Getting the cap lined up was a little frustrating, but once done the thing is still a ton lighter than the stock unit. Quieter than an empty pipe and has a better tone.
