quote:

TUV did not like the direction the exhaust pointed. Said it would cause the rear tire to overheat. Erik proved them wrong. They didn't care because they are right even when they are wrong. It would, probably still does, get the big guy pretty worked up.

The Germans told Erik that the exhaust, as configured, would heat the rear tire and cause problems.

TÜV told him to go change it.

He went back . . . engineered his youthful ass off . . .did elaborate calcs on how many kilocalories and thermogonculators a rotating rubber mass with a defined specific gravity would retain and how much would be transferred to the air and the road on each revolution.

He proved TÜV wrong and went back.

They chuckled and explained . . . . . "we Sir are German TÜV Engineers . . .we did not say "explain it" . . we said "Change it".

TÜV - 1

Erik - 0

Fortunately he not as hard headed as he used to be . . . . .

Motorrad #12 from 1992 (23. Mai 1992) had a road test of an RSS:

Motorrad RSS 1

Motorrad RSS 2

Even though it looks different (at different angles) I'd suspect it was likely the same,

interesting. That test I did not know. Do you have the whole article? The RS1200 in MOTORRAD 12/90 didn't sport the straw:

Basti, can you post a pic of your German RR exhaust?

With all these rare things, I have another that I have never seen but have heard of. About a year ago I had a long conversation with Devin Battley about RR1000's. Devin mentioned that he had an RR1100, further that about 10 or 11 of them were made. Any images around? It only makes sense as the 1100 motor was made before the 1200 motor. Here is another photo of me and my RR1000, Brian.
Best of Show.

I imagine that would be news to a lot of people, particularly Erik Buell.

Hello Brian
I think we know each other from different E-bay battles :-)
If I remember correct your bike was sold years ago as a rolling chassis ?

I can remember that so exactly because your bike has a different front fork ( the much sought after Ceriani with the quick axle change instead of the Marzocchi M1R)
Great work what you have done....

So where is my RR1000 section....
Best wishes
Basti

Basti, I have stop posting as the people in the Know will not respond to my questions, about the bike. Any way you are spot on, on the bike being purchased off Ebay. I believe that you have purchased parts from me in the past? Here is another photo from this summer, Brian.
Bare.

Just to clear up a point, the Japan spec RSS's did not have that TUV exhaust extender:
See here!

At least not when they left Buell (Motor Company, Inc.),

The 1100 Sportster was '86 and '87 only, Buell didn't starting building sportster-engine bikes until '88 so I'd say it's unlikely there are any RS1100's.
