I was riding my x1 and something hit my shin. I thought it was a rock or something. When I got home I noticed one of my upper motor mount bolts was gone. I touched the other one and it fell out! Both sheared off in the heads. I drilled and used an easy out to fix the problem replaced the bolts with new grade 8 bolts and washers. My question is why did this happen? And how do I avoid this in the future.

Hope you used anti-seize on those bolts.

Make sure you don't have anything else going on. Read your manual for anything else you should be looking at.

Gmaan,
It s a well known problem. You got off relatively easy, on my X1 the head cracked while drilling out the "stuck" head bolt.

The surest way to fix the issue is the NRHS billet mount which you can get from Al at americansportbike.com .

Take a look here here

The other thing to check is the front isolator. That can play in as well as it wears out.

Good luck with the bike,

Matt

I believe those bolts are grade 12. If you used grade 8, you'll be doing it all again soon.

The grade 8 is a lower grade than the OEM f911 bolt

Gmann,
There is also a brace made in germany that will help keep it from happening again. I'll see if I can dig up the name of it.

I prefer the NRHS mount Al has at American Sport Bike. But here is the one from the UK.

The Stenzel brace is what I was talking about.

Here's a link to one of the many post on the BadWeb about it.

I put one on after my second failure. First was the front mount cracked and the second was one of the bolts.
Check it out....

I have a Stenzel brace on my M2.

It is designed to help keep the motor mount bolts from flexing while allowing the front isolator to do its job in double-shear.

The plan is to use it to make another one for my S3T.

Grade 12? I better order some asap. I do have the updated billet motor mount. And yes I did use a spot of antisieze.
