I've had my 2000 X1 for about 3 months and i've loved every one of the 600 miles i've put on it. One thing that's concerned me since the day that I got it was the unusual amount of oil coming from this screw hole above the shift linkage. i plan on overhauling the bike this winter so i wanna fix everything while i'm in there. Any ideas on how to stop the leak?

is there any leakage by the primary cover gasket??

It could be I haven't ruled that out yet. I cleaned up all the mess and will probably take it for a quick ride in a lil bit to get a clearer view. I have noticed that the primary cover doesn't seem to sit flush (can kinda see the left side sticks out a little) i tried tightening the bolts on the cover and they're tightened all the way (or misthreaded...). Same with the screw. It's starting to look like it was apart at one time and wasn't put back together all that well...

Those are the wrong screws and not properly torqed,new primary gasket and attention to detail should fix you up.

Blueboy caught the problem right away !!!

These are supposed to be allan screws so they can be TORQUED "PROPERLY" !!!

OLD SCHOOL "HINT", got a screw or bolt that weeps, put a little SEALS ALL(buy at ACE HARDWARE)glue on it ...

The bolt right above the shift arm is a different length than the others, it's probably too long.

yep sure enough they be wrong. i think i'll be able to hunt down the right ones.. is there some kind of o-ring or gasket thats supposed to go around them too or just a bolt? thanks for all the help

Just the bolt. I had a similar problem but with the bolt that holds the chin fairing on the primary side. One of the bolts had caught the paper gasket pulling it through causing a massive leak. Pulled the primary off, replaced the paper gasket with RTV and no more leak.

well opened her up today and discovered the bad gasket and wrong bolts are the least of my worries - about half of the primary cover bolt holes were probably stripped in the past and was poorly helicoil-ed and they started coming out in chunks when i tried re-installing the cover. i also found the primary chain tensioner bracket snapped in half with half of it floating around in there. kinda shocking to think i've been riding with it like that.. anywho, is (correctly) reinstalling helicoils difficult? what can i expect to pay for another metal tensioner bracket?

Less than $30.

Make sure you replace the primary cover gasket, the shift shaft gasket (o-ring) and all screws should be allen head ones. Snug but not excessively tight.

American Sport Bike has what you need. Nice to have the stuff you need delivered to your door! Call Al and ask for his advice on the heli-coil replacement

If helicoils done hold, you can try time certs.
