Any ideas on how to fix my leaky oil tank connection. The problem is with the hose that connects on the left side. It just very loosely plugs in to the side of the plastic tank and is then both sealed and held on with some sort of flexible silicon. It started leaking badly so I removed all the silicon(?) sealant that holds it on and cleaned it well(and then sanded it a bit as well)and then resealed it with commercial automobile grade black silicon...It ,looks like the stuff that Buell originally used ...but...It worked fine...for awhile...but after about 50 miles it started leaking again. The silicon doesn't seem able to stick to the type of plastic that the tank is made from. I'd like to maybe thread something into that hole for a permanent fix. Any ideas? Thanks, Rob

When my grommets leaked I got new ones, removed the tank, de-greased it, then cyanoacrylate glued them back on.

When that happened to my oil tank years ago ...

"i" went to the Dealer to but new GROMMETS and was told "i" would have to buy a NEW OIL TANK !!!

BUELLschitte, just when home and GLUED them back in !!!

110,772.1 miles as of the last ride, still waiting for the GLUED in grommets to LEAK ???

They are what many lawn mowers use on the plastic fuel tank fittings. My '96 S1 oil tank grommets were leaking so I got new ones at a local small engine repair shop for a couple dollars.....exactly the same, and the new ones are soft.....no glue needed.....no more leaks even after a couple years.

How can there be "no glue needed'....the ones on my tank aren't real grommets, just real thick rubber washers and they have to be glued to the tank....

I cleaned the tank area and tried a new super glue especially for plastic, then supplemented that with black auto silicone seal...I'll give it 24 hours then fire it up and see what happens...hopefully no gushers...until then , I'll just have to ride my new 2011 Triumph Speed Triple.

Buellistic, sorry no part numbers or type of lawn mower.

My grommets were not just washers, they pushed into holes in the plastic tank, with a portion on the inside and a portion on the outside that "looked" like a washer.

I pulled my hard leaky grommets out and went to a lawnmower shop (he works on anything), handed him the grommet, and he returned from his bins with the new flexible grommets. It cost a couple dollars for all of them.

They were exactly like the Buell grommets, only new and flexible. When you push the oil fitting into the grommet, it expands the grommet slightly and makes the seal.

Those "real" push in grommets sound great...self-sealing, etc....but my tank doesn't have them...I'd prefer to avoid having to glue things together....a couple more questions though...since I have no actual grommet to show the Lawnmower Man for a match...were the tank holes 1/2 inch? They are on my tank....and what year is your bike...mine is 98...I'm curious if they cheapened production that year, or went to the real grommets later when they found out how easily the "glue-on" washers could fail.

So far the glue-on washer is holding..but I haven't gone too far from home...I am not confident...if anybody has a few of the real oil tank sealing grommets they don't want, send them my way...

I couldn't find grommets either and had to glue my old ones back in. Still holding after 6000 + miles!

But after reading this iv come to two conclusions....
#1. I'm not as ghetto as I thought, I.e. Supergluing them in!
And #2. I'm gonna check some other leads to find grommets to make it correct, I.e. Local lawnmower repair shop!

I was hoping to glue the grommet into the tank of my s1, I guess the oil fitting pulls out of the grommet before removing the grommet from the tank. I don't want to wreck grommet and find I can't get another. Are they real stiff to pull out?
