Hitting the corners yesterday. Thought I missed a gear. Rolled to the ride of the road and saw this was missing. Looked back and saw it in the middle of the road about a 1/4 mile back. Whats you experience with belts? How long should these last? This was replaced around 5 years ago with a new sportster belt when I purchased the bike. Of course, it was way to tight before I learned how to properly adjust a tuber belt. Maybe the belt being so tight for who knows how long... had an effect on this...? The funny thing about this breakdown was, about 2 miles back I saw a wide glide sitting on the side of the road with the rider. Thinking he was broke down, I turned around to see if he was ok. He was, and thanked me for stopping. While I'm on the side of the road... here he comes. I waved him down. He road right past me! I kinda laughed to myself and scratched my head while thinking WTF? I bet 10 bikes road past me in a 45 min period. 1 stopped (sportster) He told me me "stop eye balling my belt". Got a chuckle out of that! Thank God I own a trailer and wasn't to far from home.  | ||

I got about 3k out of my first one , and then i went to chain .Im pretty sure your's broke due to the YANKEE sticker on the tank .Could be a coincidence but prob not | ||

And I thought I was the only one who believed the Yankee sticker was bad karma! Anyway, moving on .... I seem to remember discussion here (some long time ago) about Sportster belts fitting, but not being a long term replacement. Engine power, type of use, whatever, they just didn't last as long. And too tight is also an issue. There are folks here who have gotten a LOT of miles out of their original belts. | ||

If IMPROPERLY adjusted over its life time, 50K or less !!! If CORRECTLY ADJUSTED, its life span depends on how you ride ... DRIVE BELT Class 101, just PM me for a copy ... | ||

Thanks Buellistic! I actually got the info. from you a couple of years ago. That's how I learned the correct procedure. God himself is a Yankees fan and I'm pretty sure he would ride a BUELL !  | ||

I have about 80,000 miles on my original s2T belt and it still looks good. I average 2 wheelies per ride and don't baby it but don't abuse it. | ||

Ok Quit your crying! I'm trying to fix my bike. Why do people think they can just sound off? Is a Sportster belt the same or not? I know it'll go on, but is it the same quality? I would think a belt is a belt...no? (Message edited by onebadx1 on October 09, 2011) | ||

96s2t, "i" just love you british, your hummer is so suttle and to the point ... Onebadx1 The SPORTSTER 128 tooth belt is good as that is what "i" have on my 1997 S3T ... The HIGHER PRICED BETTER BELTS will brake if not adjusted correctly !!! | ||

When you replace your belt clean the grooves in both sprockets.They get packed with dust and dirt and can make the belt ride up in the sprockets. Good luck with your easy repair. If I had the choice I would replace it with the Buell part and if I was stuck on the sde of the road I would use anything to get me home. But I think the sporty belt has just as much strength as the Buell belt. (Message edited by 96s2t on October 09, 2011) | ||

The Buell part number is better in quality and cheaper IF available. The sportster part fits and works fine. MUCH more easy to find a sporty belt. | ||

Back on topic ... FWIW, my '01 X-1 parts book lists the item as Belt, drive 128T p/n 40022-91. Hope this helps, Dave | ||

Thanks for the info everyone. I can pick up a belt at my local HD dealer for the sportster instead of going to Buell dealer 80 miles away. This is the only reason I'm asking. | ||

What little I know from my previous HD ownership is the HD part # ends in the year of origin. 40222-91 is a HD part # from twenty years ago, I think. If a service manual gives you a HD # then a HD part will work. | ||

2001 S3T uses a stock Sportster belt. That's what is in the parts book. My original lasted about 55k, replacement (sportster belt) still going strong @ 76k miles. Barry | ||

Sounding in a little late on this but Al at American sport bike has the XB belt that will work. Great service also. Listen to LaFayette, He helped me out a TON when my belt went. Even took a phone call from me when I was in over my head. That is what separates Buellers from others. Good luck and happy Buelling!! | ||

I average 2 wheelies per ride and don't baby it but don't abuse it. I just love this quote, A man after my own heart. I seem to ride about the same way, Sometimes I just can't help myself and in a way kinda think it a design flaw in the Buell itself. I don't even need to touch the clutch, Just roll on the throttle a little too much and the tire rises. It's not like I bring it straight up just a nice rolling rise that if you really hit it hard will do it again in second too. Made me laugh when I read this though. Ride safe guys. |
