Why is there never any talk about the S3's? Yeah, I know that the S3 is essentially an M2 with fairings and bags but with a 5 year production run I would think the owners would be on Badweb proudly talking about them???

They kind of went from being an M2 with fairings and bags to being an X1 with fairings and bags, changing from carb to FI, and picking up other good changes like the cast swing arm and updated tube frame details after 1998. I guess it was the only Buell model to switch over, unless you want to consider the change from S1 Lightning to X1 Lightning the same way. I don't, though.

They weren't ever an M2--if you're talking about the engine. The 1997 S3 was the same as the S1 engine, the next year SOME S1 models got the 101 HP Thunderstorm engine (the S1W) but ALL of the S3s got that engine. In 1999, the S3 again got the same engine as the Lightning--then of course with fuel injection.

The chassis also got the higher-grade suspension of the Lightning models and the stainless exhaust (when the Cyclones had normal carbon-steel headers).

The only thing that was 'Cyclone' was the frame--which amounts to lower footpeg mounts and welded passenger-peg loops. It's Cyclone seating position with all the performance of the Lightning--at the penalty of 15 pounds; a small price to pay for the pocket of clean air the fairing provides.

The S3 was a genius of a motorcycle. If I had realized that it had everything I wanted in a bike back in 2001 when I test rode the X1, I would have bought a brand-new S3T.

My favorite to ride is my S2, though if I were honest with myself and could only own one, the S3 would be the most versatile of my four tubers.

Good points, Greg. And the USD forks - definitely not M2 territory.

"Why the race pipe on a touring bike with a trailer hitch?"

Because he may want to pull this to the lake.

Besides I'd hardly call the S3T a "Touring" bike.

I have an S3 also. It's just that I don't have many problems with it. I would post a picture but my camera takes to big of a picture and I don't have a photo editor. They're out there and still running strong.

Yeah, I'm kinda thinkin' it's 'cause the S3 riders are either old enough to know everything already, or they ride slow enough to not break them...

Well, because the bike already makes a stonking amount of midrange and sounds great with the stock muffler and still brags a solid top end rush.

The race pipe compromises both of those qualities for a little bit of top-end and having to put up with all that noise while touring. Who the heck wants to listen to all that racket when touring?

While the S3 is a fine weapon for home defense, the S2 is what keeps the communists up at night.

That and the S2 has legend status.

Edward, no offense intended.

Sounds as if you are not slow. That puts you in the "old enough to know everything" category. That's a bit tongue-in-cheek. You generally offer useful advice to the younger riders/owners...and with the miles you've put in you must have figured out how to make it work without having to ask everyone here.

I wish I could put in more miles annually. BC (before child) I rode my bike almost exclusively. I've ridden in sleet, hail, rain and the leading edges of a tornado. MY bike has always been a transportation tool more than a toy, so leisure riding seldom happens.

She's getting bigger now, I suppose if I had an S3 with a back rest and bags I'd ride much more. Won't do a backrest though, even a slim Corbin type one on my M2(S1 tail), it would just look silly.

Peace brother.
