Picked up a 1997 Buell today. Supposedly started life as a thunderbolt race bike. Now has M2 bodywork in street trip. It has the following:

corbin seat
ohlins steering stabalizer
trailtech vapor speedo
chain conversion
xb front end,
xb 9 stroker crank w/xb9 high comp pistons
xb heads shaved .050 w/mild porting
SE 536 cams
SE ignition
vance&hines full exhaust
marchesini wheels

Cosmetically not perfect but not bad. The only thing it really needs is new tires. All for $1500. I'm happy! I was sad to see my X1 go last fall.

Sounds like you picked up a nicely modded M2.

Cosmetically not perfect. Pretty much describes how an M2 should be.

What is an "xb 9 stroker crank"?

>>> w/xb9 high comp pistons

Might want to find out exactly what those are. Buell didn't sell any "high compression pistons", just XB9 and XB12. The XB9 piston used in a 1200cc engine would generate higher compression, probably what you have.

>>> xb heads shaved .050

Combined with the XB9 pistons, that would make for a pretty aggressive compression ratio, not one likely useful for street use. You can always swap pistons or put in a thicker base gasket to compensate if needed.

Sounds like a real monster.

From what I was told this was a race bike and this was the information that was passed on. No real information on it except what I can see which is the XB heads. Owner believed the motor was around 11.5:1 compression. Running ok now on premium with the fall WI weather.

All I can really compare it to is my X1 with a race ecm and full D&D system, otherwise its stock. It does not like to lug around at lower RPM's as much as the X1, but pulls harder and likes to rev. Only ridden a few miles, will get better feel for it on the Slimy Crud Run tomorrow...

Jesse,
Your profile says you're in Vegas, but are you in WI? Saw that bike on CL around WI somewhere.

Thanks! Need to update the ol' profile. Live in the Madison area now.
It was on Clist. The guy had it listed and kept dropping the price. Made him a cash offer and I have another bike like I need a hole in the head.

I would be more than happy to listen if anyone has any real info on this bikes history... Everything I have is just word of mouth but the bike is unique.

I looked into getting an XB crank in tuber cases and it wasn't possible...Well, anything is possible but you'd need to have the inside of the cases machined to fit which would be costly.

Anyways, I have XB9 pistons and XB heads on my bike, compression is about 11.9:1. Don't run anything less than 93 octane. You're about 2 hours from me, I live in Kenosha.

Rode it all day of the Slimey Crud. It ran great besides needing new rubber. The throttle also started moving slightly on the bar. Need to find a new single pull setup. Any ideas? Don't know what carb is on it or how hard it would be to switch back to the stock dual cable setup. Would also be nice to have a kill switch again.

4traxx, The Trailtech Vapor works good. From looking at the pics it has been on the bike for awhile. It is accurate, automatically turns on and off, backlit, easy to read. Has tons of features that I have not figured out and some like the tach is not hooked up. My only complaint is the speed is a little busy because it shows 1/10ths so it is always bouncing around.
