so my X1 with a 42mm mikuni carb recently just started acting up. It started backfiring out the carb and breathing really heavy. It wouldn't idle at first and now it wont even start just backfires really bad out of the carb! i think it may also be running to rich, because the catch can and around the air filter is some black soot. but not sure.

just want to get some opinions and thoughts on the cause. what i got so far.

1. fouled spark plugs
2. timing
3. fuel could be pre-igniting in the carb

Please help.

what do the plugs look like?

if either is white intake seals

if not timing / timer failure

Wow! A carb question! Not to make fun of your problem, it's just a long time (for me)since one came up.

Anyway, seems like the prob came on all at once? Take the carb off, leave it right side up, and remove the float bowl. Dump that into a clean container, and look for debris. Even if there is none, carefully inspect the float needle and seat. You may find something stuck there, causing fuel to run into the carb throat.
Once sure everything is clean, manually confirm the float needle is in fact stopping the fuel flow.

Having said that, it seems that 9 out of 10 times when I looked for a carb problem (especially if the above didn't fix it) the problem turned out to be ignition/timing stuff.

no the problem didnt start all at once, it was running fine one day then started to stall at idle at red lights and would backfire, id start it back up and continue the next day it was doing the same thing, 3rd day is when i went to start it in the morning and it was backfiring really bad out of the carb and wouldnt maintain and idle.

Also i dont thing i have the know how enough to be tearing my carb part :/ or at least to start there. also on the first couple days it ran great once running no problem at all just at idle and slowly got worse.

i got some carb and injector cleaner, also new plugs which will be in tomorrow, just to start somewhere.

If it is is a timing issue, what are my options you think??

Not timing--did you change plugs and see if that helped,how long has bike sat with the gas in it and did you accidently swap plug wires?
No pre-ignition.
And did this start after a fill up?

So last night i attempted to change the plugs and locate some more info about the carb back firing. I noticed some fire shooting out of the side of the engine while it was running, it would backfire only when i burped the throttle. so i shut the engine off. i couldnt find a whole in the side of the engine, but there is metal lodged behind my push rod. here is a piece of it. working on getting the carb off now. im hoping this is just a carb malfunction and this blew off and wedge behind the push rod. any idea what this piece is?

Looks like exhaust gasket to me but i can't really tell.

Looks like a head gasket blow out-that would explain the fire out the side of engine.Do not run it anymore.

Yup,head gasket.Look to see if you had a head bolt loosen,seen a couple. And if not look carefully at the top of the cylinder. The stockers are an iron sleeve in aluminum and can separate and lift the sleeve causing this. Should be a smooth line between them on top of cylinder.

im actually relieved to hear this knowing it could be much worse. going to make some phone calls and get this fixed.

LaFayette, would you have anything in this area as far as engine dismantle. my father is going to help because he has done it before, but would like some guidance. thanks.

Ouch! But, at least now you know what the problem is. Also a good chance to be a 'pit gunkie' shagging tools and shop towels, and getting to learn a lot.

If not already in your inventory, get a service manual. I consider it the most important tool in the tool box. Reading through the procedure makes things like getting the exhaust header off (and back on) much easier. And the head bolts do have a 'different' and specific way to be torqued.

BTW, more than a few folks here have had to replace leaking cyl base gaskets after pulling off the head. They now pull the cyl as well and replace the base gasket as a matter of course, anytime a head is removed.

Hello, not sure if anyone in here is still interested but i have an update on my 99 X1. Turns out the head gasket was shot but i didnt stop there as far as fixing the bike. New head gaskets, spark plugs and wires, push rod o-rings. Also the back of my mikuni carb had a huge crack in it! replaced that as well. cleaned the engine top to bottom. Started her for the first time today but she is still puffing a little on the rear cylinder so she should be good to finish out the season in a couple days. : )
