Im just keeping my fingers crossed that the OCC wannabe chopper fad is winding down, and for the most part of it, thats all it is, a fad, which is why these mutants started being built IMO... with the new Cafe Racer show on TV and other trends that seem to be going in the direction of bikes that can be ridden more practically, who knows, maybe 5 years from now people will be buying mutants for the motors to put them in a tube frame and make an awesome street bike!

one can hope

James

PS please come home S1W, you are sorely missed : (

There is a place for all bikes. That being said I originally bought mine to chop. Once with the helpof people on this board I realized what I have and love to ride it! I get more people looking at it then most of the chops I ride with. I will be buying an old beatup 750 Tami or something to hack on just to satisfy my need to invent! My point it would be nice to leave the rare ones alone but everyone gone makes mine cooler and more rare!

Used Sportster? $6k-8k because of the name.

I cruise CL nightly, and have been buying and selling bikes for about 15 years off there.

On just my local Rochester, NY listing, I stopped counting at two dozen sportsters that were between 1700 and 3000.

There's a crap ton of 'em out there. No need for chopping an x1 based on the economics.}

This thread is like the jelly of the month club - the gift that keeps on giving.

The other thing that cracks me up is cutting a Buell because it makes more power. More power than what? A Sportster? Great, now you'll have the fastest slow-bike out there.

Fookin' hell, any 600 supersport out there will give my Thunderstorm S3 a run for its money in a straight line. A new Kawasaki Concours would probably blow it away--maybe even two-up. My 'old man' 1993 ZX-11 with three Givi saddlebags would outrun any of my Buells. It also weighs 100 pounds more than the heaviest Buell and has porky and vague handling by comparison (guess what I ride more?).

If 'fast' is the goal, find another motorcycle. Tubers are 'quick' and supremely rideable but, they ain't fast. And since bobbers and choppers aren't meant to go around corners well, you get the worst of both worlds. Who does that make sense to again?

At this time of the year it blows my mind people have this much time to worry about this. You know as well as me these bikes are for sale in huge numbers at rock bottom prices, right? Although we may feel these bikes are collectors items I really don't think the vast majority of people do. They can find a great motor for a fraction of the price to fill a hole in a bike they are building. This guy came here thinking he was doing the right thing by selling the parts to people that did love these machines, And caught hell for it. There is a reason they come after Buell's, They are cheap to get and the reason they want them is the motor. Sorry but true. Chuck.

I don't know, Chuck. He wasn't here to 'help' anybody but himself. He probably paid in the range of $2000-2500 for that bike and just wanted to recoup as much as he could.

What is a running 1965 Norton Atlas worth? How about if it's been made into a chopper?

All of that chopping up should only help us out that want to keep ours intact. Neither of mine are bone stock so what collector will want mine for it's collectors status in 20 years?

I guess Buells are not the only victims. A Guzzi V11 Rosso Mandello died to create this gem.

Even the score and anti-chop a Sporty. Something like this with lights would be cool
