My primary chain needs adjusting so as part of that I decided to drain the transmission oil and pull the primary cover and inspect the chain, sprockets and clutch pack. I noticed that the shoe does not appear to be worn down, however, there are grooves in the shoe. Is this by design or an indication that the shoe is bad? Thanks! | ||

Groves in the plastic shoe means the primary chain is or has been adjusted TOO TIGHT !!! PRIMARY CHAIN ADJUSTMENT Class 101, just PM me if you want a copy ... | ||

That's what I thought, however, when I pulled the small inspection cover the chain was loose! The chain was hanging down about the center of the inspection cover hole. Could be the previous owner had it too tight and loosened it after the shoe damage was done? I have ordered an new Tensioner assembly from my local HD as well as a new clutch cable. Perhaps I should replace the Primary Chain? Can you recommend a good source for those aside from the HD dealer? Thanks! | ||

As long as your PRIMARY CHAIN is kept CORRECTLY ADJUSTED and with the CORRECT FLUID/OIL LEVEL it will be good for 100K miles ... My OEM PRIMARY CHAIN has 110,722.1 miles as of the last ride ... | ||
