No trying to start a flame war here, but I went to a local dealer to pick up a brake pedal for my Y2K MaDeuece, and was confronted with TWO surprising data points:

Surprise the first -- they HAD it!

Surprise the second -- the parts guy ( who was mumbling anti buell stuff not to sotte voice) said it was listed as an obsolete part

I've not checked with any entirely reliable sources on surprise the second, but figured I'd let the collective know . . . . . if true, more common parts than race ECMs and S3 bag lids could be on their way out . . . .could be worth a call to stock up on tipover parts, I'm thinkin

When necessary replacement parts become unavailable the bike itself then often becomes parts. I wonder how many of the 1970-1990 Sportster parts are obsolete?

ps, kind of funny that the last time I was in a HD dealership I was looking at a used BMW they had in there. Food for thought.

I find it odd that I can get a part (custom machined, not cheap) for a 1920sumpin flattie from HD, but newer stuff is going the way of the great auk . . . . ah well

Bomber...I've found that too many times it's a "misread" by the uninformed parts desk clerk. It's usually the "part number" that is obsolete, not the actual part.

Just my observations. YMMV.

Adds credence to a post I made on a different thread. Whenever I see a sidewalk sale or clearance table I look for things for my X1.

Have a pretty good stash that will come in handy someday, including the brand new still in the box spare Race ECM I bought from DaveS earlier this year.

Still with companies like American Sport Bike to funnel our orders through, we should be in good hands for quite some time to come.

Lake -- you're right, of course, which is why I said I'd nbot doublechecked the data . . .

Like Outie sez, though, it may pay to start ahunting the dealer garage sales and the like . . . .

Bomber...Thanks, but I got the suggestion from Blake and Ferris when I was whining about the Race ECM's being discontinued.

Before then, I would always pick up tip over parts like the bread boxes, etc at the tent sales. Good deals and someday either you or the fellow/fellowette that buys your bike will appreciate it.
