While doing a handlebar swap on my newly purchased buell (stock bars much more comfy than the home-made street fighter ones it came with), I had to take off the windscreen. I noticed it was kinda odd that when unscrewing it the screws didn't seem to turn against anything.. So now with the bar swapped out it came time to put it back on the screws refuse to grab anything.. I notice there is a little metal jacketing still on the screws. Is that supposed to still be attached to the mounting bracket? What are the big rubber sleeves supposed to do? Any help would be awesome

there are hat nuts, the rubber bits are bonded to the brass or steel gizmos that you found on the screen screws,

try a good hardware store, or

home cheapo

they are a combination of a nut and rubber mount
most X1 body work ( tank cover and air box mount with them, OH yeah dont lock tite them ever

on my S1 the flyscreen is held on with screws and wellnuts the wellnut is a rubber sleeve with a threaded brass insert...when you tighten the screw down it pulls the brass and causes the rubber to balloon out and grab the hole

sounds like you pulled the inserts out of the rubber, if that is the case....try to get the inserts off of the screw without damaging the screw and buy new wellnuts (my local hardware store sells new wellnuts) is my suggestion

well gave it another look-over and turns out the threads on/inside the brass nut and screw were clogged and stuck with paint!(random.?) anyways, got the brass nuts off and put the windscreen back on and tightened the nuts back on with the rubber in between and got it on good thanks guys!
