Need to get my front brake Master rebuilt. Not sure what to use. I thought I read that what is called for in the manuel and on the master cover are not the same. | ||

In 2000 they used dot4, I would think that whatever the mastercyl. said would be right. Some you can mix, some you can't. I think 3&4 will mix, but not positive. Should say on the can. | ||

im pretty sure the main difference between 3&4 is boiling point (4 being higher). With that being said, the XB master i have on my X1 says right on the cover, use DOT 5, the XB manual says only use DOT 4.... doesnt make much sense to me. I put in DOT 4 and its working fine. DOT 5 is a completely different being silicone based. | ||

I'd say that--yes--if the bike is all original and has its original master cylinder cap, then use whatever it says. For a 1997, I'm almost positive that you use DOT 5. If your bike is one of the parts-bin refugees that so many on here seem to have turned into, it could be anybody's guess. The hard parts don't care and many of them are identical. The difference is the soft parts: seals, hoses, cups. Does your front caliper have a Pegasus logo on it or does it have "BUELL" cast into it? If it has a Pegasus logo, you need DOT 5. | ||

5 is what was originally used. Stick with what is on the cap. Remember, 5 is 5. 5.1 is not compatible with 5. 5.1 goes with 3 or 4, not with 5. Amazingly stupid DOT numbering system. | ||

Hell, I did not even know about the 5.1 fluid. Where did that come from? | ||

Yeah - that's kind of the problem. It's out there, but no one knows about it. So if they see it and happen to be looking for 5, then.... The problem is that DOT 5 is silicone based, whereas 3, 4 and 5.1 are glycol-based. And they don't mix. | ||

3,4,5.1 will mix but NONE of those mix with Dot 5. My 97 S1 came with DOT 5. I did switch to Dot 4 for the front but I put a New Brembo master, New brake line, and took apart my caliper and cleaned with alcohol and installed New seals. I have the Performance Machine caliper shown in the pic above. It's supposed to be Dot5. You will trash all of the seals and rubber if you mix the wrong type and your brakes could and probably will fail. My rear is still Dot5 but I'm the only one who touches my bike. If you are rebuilding your master you may as well rebuild the caliper. Simple to do and you will see just how dirty those pistons and interior of the caliper is. Check with americansportbike.com for the kit. | ||

Mike, For your knowledge vault, that caliper was made by Performance Machine, the same people who made your rims. You can see their logo up near the bleeder valve. | ||

I just sent an Email to Erik Buell Racing asking what I should be using in my tuber with XB master and caliper and they just replied "DOT4" | ||

I din't realize the masters could be rebuilt. I was told just to replace since at the time it was only $25. I did rebuild the caliper. I still have the old master and would be nice to have extra one around. Are there instructions for the rebuild? Where do you get the kits? -Br- |
