Hello fellows I'm new to buell , I just picked up a 2001 m2 with 16k on the clock . I have been riding and working on jap bikes for about ten years now but find this a bit different . I have a couple of questions ???
A. I plan on changing all the fluids and after reading all the info on the threads plan on going with the mobil one v twin , can I use that for the primary drive as well , how much should I put in , and will it smooth out the shifting . " it's a bit rough "

B. What else should I be looking to check for, or change to keep this bad boy riding for a good long time

Chris, if you haven't gotten one already, get a factory service manual.

A. check, I put that in my primary as well. Bike has to be upright and the oil level is at the dotted line in the picture below the diaphragm spring.

Primary chain adjustment may have something to do with a little rough shifting, though they don't shift like Jap bikes so I can't really tell without first hand diagnosis. The manual gives you all of the basic maintenance items. If things aren't to spec then you can follow up here with all sorts of questions for folks.

When I bought my 00 M2, I didn't know where to begin. Picked up the manual and ended up making sure most basic were where they're supposed to be.

I found quickly a bunch of ham-fisted, prior owner issues. That made me go through everything to get familiar with the bike.

Tons of posts here and help. One of the very first sources I'll give you the link to... Is for an S2, but most of the sources of concern apply to the M2 to some extent. From there you can make some more focused searches if you like. But in a nutshell here's some really good info in one place to get your feet wet!

Yes, you can use the Mobile 1 V-twin Oil in the primary. When I switched to an after market clutch they recommended against Synthetic so I switched from the Mobile to Shell Rottella-T 15W40 and I have been very satisfied with the Rottella-T. It's also very inexpensive so that is a bonus. The Rottella-T seems a bit better but then again I had done a bunch of work and probably have a better adjustment then before.
