Buddy and I are cruising on the freeway. I Went to downshift to pass a semi. Instead of hitting a gear, I ended up just reving up. I pulled the clutch in again, and tried to down shift, still nothing. Like it was in neutral. I could not downshift no matter how many times i tried. I had to "shift up" back to the gear I was in, before I could go down. then all was fine.

Anyone know what that is?

I get a false neutral coming down from 5th if I'm moving pretty fast, decelerating off the freeway for instance.

I've also had to shift back up into 5th then down again to get into 4th.

Whatever it is I think we have the same problem. Perhaps the detent plate is off by a hair, so shifting is not precise, leading the trans to miss the next gear?

I keep putting off pulling my tranny out and having a look at it. We'll see what others have to say on the matter.

Are you running the old shift detention plate or newer one? Regardless, you might have to seat the 4 pins that it rides on...if they backed out a little, your detention might be angled and not engaging correctly. Also, you may have to adjust the clearance of engagement between the pins and shifter arm with a #32 drill bit in 3rd gear. You will have to remove the clutch drum and primary sprocket to access the shifter detent plate.

I had that happen at 130+ mph trying to downshift into a corner and talk about pucker corner.

I had the tranny rebuilt to race specs and had all the gears back-cut so no more false neutrals or 1st gear slipping into gear under heavy acceleration. I had zippers performance re-build the tranny. And i also upgraded the trap door to a billet aluminum one for strength.

Don't forget about the cut down primary cover to hold the shifter drum in alignment for the adjustment.

i have had that happen twice on upshifts under hard acceleration.

The manuals say to push down on the "crank" (I would call it a shifter shaft) but don't push too hard and then to adjust the shifter detente mechanism.
We always used an old primary cover that was cut to both hold the shifter drum in position and allow access to the detente adjustment.
I'd imagine that either method would work fine but the cut down cover seems a little less crude.

I kept getting false neutrals from first to second and from fourth to fifth under hard acceleration. Pulled the primary and found that the shifter pawl return spring popped off. Easy fix...shifts fine now.
