My bike puked oil all over my rear tire. Fortunately it was in stop and go traffic and I noticed it when I pulled away from a red light and started fish-tailing. Upon seat removal, I noticed that the oil cap had popped off... anyone ever had this happen before??? I hate to think about what would've happened if I'd been ripping it up on a twisty road...

Im thinking stop and go traffic kept your air cooled motor from being air cooled. Temp went way up, pressure also increased and when you gave throttle and got the oil moving again it was too much for the cap to hold and it popped off.

NAILED IT!!!

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I thought that I might have over filled the oil.

Yeah, I was down at Myrtle Beach when someone stopped me and said "what happened to your bike?! theres oil everywhere!"

Banke screw in oil filler cap is a great adittion to a tuber. I am pretty sure they are still available.

This tends to happen most often to people who add oil without warming the engine first. I did this once, found that it's kinda non-habit forming, as a slippery back tire is a bad thing.

Remember your oil will drain down into the motor when the bike is not running. This can happen if you check oil and add prior to riding the bike at the start of your day, enough will move overnight to cause some decent spewage out the vent if you are adding oil cold.

If that's not the case I suggest you check your primary (remove derby cover) if oil dumps out you've probably lost your crankshaft main seal and engine oil is moving into the primary, then spitting out the trans breather.

I leave a folded up shop towel under the seat on top of the cap....makes checking the oil when you are in the middle of no where cleaner too

I definitely changed/added oil when it was cold... I didn't realize that was a no-no. Also just thought about the fact that it was on a swingarm stand when I did it... not sure if that would've given a false reading or not.

On the rear stand shouldn't matter too much once the engine is warm. My bike levels out around 1/4-3/8 on the stick, whether on the side stand or wheel lift.

Once your oil levels off it should stay pretty much the same unless you are doing some really spirited riding. find that level and stick with it, 'cause your bike will blow off the excess if you keep adding oil between your regular changes.

I usually use something so I have a fairly decent idea how much I drain and also try and check oil level before and after. It is easy to have some idea on what you drain as I pour it back in used gallon oil jugs that have the marks on the side.
