Hi BWB, need some advice in prepping for a big ride in sept/oct, from Brooklyn to SF (via VA,NC,TX,NM,AZ,CA). The bike currently has 11k miles on it.

I've had my '02 X1 for about 3 months and have put 1,200 miles on it, many of those are harsh and hot NYC/Brooklyn miles. It seems to run pretty smooth most of the time (except when it gets hot).

I've done the following
* Changed Primary & Engine oil
* General tune up at Harley stealership (plugs, etc)
* Replaced rear shock (penske)
* Flashed stock ECU w/ race maps
* Just bought replacement brake pads
* Considering replacing tires before I go
* Will change engine oil again, before I go

I've checked out
* ISO's all seem to look OK
* I've adjusted my belt to be nice and loose (although I did accidentally ride w/ it pretty tight for a week, after setting up the shock)

Fears
* Heat
* Some common point of failure that I forget to check out/remedy
* Lack of common sense

What other things should I inspect? Any other major caveats? Thanks!

Note: I did 3k+ mile tour on my old YZF600R (brooklyn > atlanta > detroit > boston > brooklyn), so I'm not jumping into this totally uninitiated.

Buellrobot,
make sure to check the front iso (under the front of the tank) and that the cylinder head bolts into the front engine mount are tight. The torque is 60ft-lbs.

It never hurts to do a quick check of stuff like exhaust clamps., turns signals, clutch cable locking nut etc. All stuff that has fallen off my 01 on long rides.

Never forget that last thing, relax and enjoy!

Have fun

You won't run into any real heat that time of year.

I did a six day run to Philly on my '00. No issues until Chicago stop and go. Intake seals are on their way out. Replacement is fairly easy, so you might as well change yours too.

I'd definitely check out the primary chain tensioner. Al at American Sport Bike sells just about anything you'll need for your bike.

Make a toolkit up. 36mm socket with breaker, wrenches for the rear adjusters, spark plug socket with rachet and small extender, some baling wire, electrical tape, spare key, wire strippers, pliers, allen wrenches, tie wraps, small screwdriver for compression/rebound adjustments as you need them, spare spark plug, spare spark plug wire (long one). Wrap all in an old t-shirt.

I'd pull the diagnostic plug that resides next to your steering head right behind your flyscreen (tucked in and may be hard to find at first---it's a four pin connector), pull the rubber plug out, rotate the connector so the connector lock is in the 12 o'clock position and jumper the two right pins. This will allow you to read out your DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes) if you have any. You're CEL located in the tach will flash any codes out. Make sure your kill switch is on and then turn your ignition key to run, but don't start it. Write down any codes and report back. We can help you from there.

EDIT: Get a tailbag if you don't have one. Excellent butt massager as you ride

My favorite place of all...Brooklyn. Nicest people I've ever met.

Print out a copy of the Bran for all the areas/states you'll be in. Are you going to have access to Badweb as well? Won't hurt to if you get stranded in BFE.

jump your side stand switch, ground the voltage regulator(scrape the paint at the bolt locations-run a ground strap if possible to the exhaust bolt and possibily check the electrical system condition, all of it.setup the suspension as it will go on the trip.
your primary and final drive adjusted per the 101 method( ask buellistic for this)
have the hoses been changed?, as for pads the rear takes patience to get a good bleed.
just changed my front mount,looked good from the top but was spliting vertically at the bottom, could feel it with the finger tip.lube the cables during your oil changes
taking our trip the first of sept.
have a great ride.

TX, NM, and AZ can be hot in the fall.

Battery condition?

Long ('Dyna') oil filter? Oil cooler?

Lube the cables good.

Fix a Flat kit in tools.

Thanks for all the advice! Front/rear isos look very good at this point. I will take an android phone w/ me, so will have access to BW when there's a signal. I also dialed in the suspension the other week (it's soooo much nicer now).

Few Questions

@Two_seasons
Just checked the trouble codes and I get a very rapidly flashing light (probably 10 very fast flashes), a roughly 1 second pause, and then the rapid flashes again, repeated ad infinitum. Is that an actual error code or just a sort of neutral? Also, I might start a separate thread on "the best toolkit", because it seems like Buell has a funny assortment of needs (metric, standard, torx, etc).

@Kyrocket
I'm not familiar w/ the Bran? Where can I find more info?

@Richsm2
I haven't changed the hoses (you thinking just brake lines? or others?). Also, for checking the electrical system, is there a good guide or how to you know of?

@Jayvee
Battery is the one that came w/ the bike (craigslist) — is there an easy way to test a battery? No long oil filter or cooler, but I'll look into those options.

More stuff I'll try to do before I go
* Replace intake seals (this the right item?)
* Brake fluid
* Long oil filter
* Lube cables
* Inspect engine mount bolts (I've got a torque wrench and will make sure they're at spec. Any other sure-fire signs of trouble?)

Much thanks for the helpful advice!

Dean:
No DTC's on your bike. Rapid flashing several times tells you zero codes are in memory.

You're good to go.

@Two_seasons
Cool, thanks.

Just want to make sure I know how/where to install these things. Are the intake seals labeled #2 on the diagram? Manifold seals #15?

Buell robot,
i was thinking of any rubber hoses,IE fuel, breather.
Also I would check to see if the HD techs installed Buell- heat range plugs. see the tech section for the variable ngk ranges should be the 10r12 plugs.
Buell 27661-00Y (10R12) (Supersedes old/hotter 6R12 OEM plugs)
NGK DPR7ea-9 hot (not recommended)
NGK DPR8EA-9 medium
NGK DPR9EA-9 cool (equivalent to Buell 10R12)
DCPR same except socket size(cheaper)

Looked at the s1 manual in the knowledge forum, comparing it to my m2 it looks pretty much the same.approx 13 vdc for battery voltage, the vr,no more than 15vdc from the voltage regulator while running.

anyone else on the x1 , internal diagnostics available ?

#2 is your manifold seals at each side of the throttle body.

#15 is your intake seals at the cylinder.

After looking at your diagram above, you may have to get #16 instead of #15. When you pull the first one off you'll know. If you need #16, then you can sell the #15's to me. I don't think Al at American Sport Bike sells #16 seals however, so you'd need to get them from your local HD dealer.

Steve.

The Bran

Make sure you're logged in to Badweb and it's the fourth topic down. Buell Rider Adventure Network. It's a list of Buell owner/riders that are listed by state or territory that lists their names, phone numbers and notes of what they can offer be it a truck and trailer or a place to crash while someone works on it. That's the other reason to have access to the Badweb while on the road, I'm sure you've seen some of the threads where someone on the road needs help and Badwebbers are there post haste. Good luck on your trip and hope you don't need any of us.

Are you logged in? If you don't specifically log in you won't see the BRAN or the Backfire Board.

@Two_seasons, I probably do need #16 (mine is an '02), but if you could use the seals, I'll get them, just in case... I'll be buying a few things from Al anyways. Thanks for the help.

@Kyrocket
Amazing!

@Richsm
Roger that, on the hoses. I'll see if someone at the garage can help me check the battery.

You can't anticipate everything that might break on a long trip. You are already replacing all the consumables. I would include new tires and save the ones you have now for after you get back. At 11 grand you will likely need another set out on the road before you get back. (I would recommend the new Angel ST's, over 5200 miles including 2 crossings of MN/SD and barely a flat spot.) But you cannot anticipate every possible thing that might go wrong. For instance, on my trip to the S2 Rally this summer, my new master cylinder had the plunger jam on, this led to no front brakes and a warped front rotor. Then the outer clutch bearing slowly disintegrated, ending up with little or no clutch for almost a 1000 miles, leading to the inevitable broken belt. Whatever you prepare for, it will be something else that breaks. Take a good toolkit and tire repair kit, a cellphone, the BRAN, and a list of HD dealers on your route. Also Al's phone number at American Sport Bike, he can overnight parts to you if necessary. In all likelihood, anything that breaks would have broken anyway if you stayed home and put 11000 local miles on the bike.

I was thinking it was a roundtrip coast to coast, one way is still a long ride but probably no 11000 miles.

With these maintenance items mentioned above, you should ride with that work done for a while before you head out - nothing worse than having a glitch on the road due to something you just worked on.

@Essmjay
It'll be both ways... taking a more direct route back though. And I totally get ya on the "can't anticipate everything" thing, just trying to make sure I don't overlook anything too easy/obvious.

@Fahren
Really good point... I'll be sure to go for a couple of good runs before I actually leave.
