Hi all. Was planning on buying a '97 M2 sat. 9k miles, needs cosmetics and a holed muffler fixed. *Then*, today a '01 X1 shows up. Looks much cleaner, and it's the same price, $2500.00 I like the looks of the bike and the carbs better on the M2. But, getting 4 years of development sounds pretty good. I'm concerned the pegs are more radical on the X1, and the injections reliability seems questionable, after reading the forums. What would you do???? Thanks, appreciate the input. Bill D.

Rocket,
The 01's (and later) didn't have injection issues. You'll want to get ecmspy or the older VDSTS software that lets you manage the Fuel injection, do TPS resets and such.

I have 50K on that model (same colors too) which I bought new in 2001. The bike's been pretty good, but it certainly has its quirks. If you can do basic maintenance, you'll be fine with the bike.

with respect to the pegs, this is nothing close to a true sport bike. It's a very comfortable bike. I've done 2 1000 mile days on the bike. The one thing I dumped was the stock seat. I found a corbin on Ebay which I like a lot more. Especially for any distance riding. I use the stock seat for track days as it is smaller and easier to move around on

I'd go X1, but that's just me. You have fun with either

8000..... He says new tires, brakes, and serviced. How old's yours? Any problems? Particular things to look for? Thanks, Bill D.

That all sounds pretty favorable towards the X1. Will I need a laptop to use ecmspy, or equivalent? I'm a Mac guy, so that might be a problem...

X1 has better forks, swing arm, more power and removable side plates for changing the isolators and belt.
I had a lot of problems with my 02 X1W initially thanks to HarLee leaving drilling swarf in the oil passageways inside the timing cover (!) and I've had the shift detente pins back out twice which popped off that stupid retaining clip.
Green Loctite appears to have fixed that and while I think of it, put a drop of green Loctite on each of the screws that hold the butterfly valve to the shaft inside the throttle body.
X1s are really rowdy machines, especially with a race kit on them.
The early X1 seats were too soft, the later ones are nut crunchers (just so you know).
Mine has 15,000 miles on it and has sat for the past 5 years but I plan on getting it going again this Fall.

The Cyclone is a simpler machine due to the carbs so the choice is yours. X1s have been converted to carbs if it comes to that further on down the road.

I was going to say the same thing.. the X1 gives you better front forks and rear swingarm. Im a EFI guy, so thats another plus for me. I used to ride an R1 and my X1 is so comfortable. Ive had my 99 X1 for 3 years and its a blast to ride and have not given me any injector problems to date.

Your profile says you have a 2001 S3 already. The X1 is going to be a duplicate with a tighter footpeg relationship and no wind protection.

With that said, the only reason that X1 is still there is that I have zero room for it. I've been watching it for a month. If you buy it, ride the hell out of it and please keep it stock. There don't seem to be many (stock ones) left.

I ended up not getting the S3 in my profile. My mom had a series of strokes while I was dealing with it. I dropped outa the deal. Didn't have the time to deal with it at that moment.....

You mean this one?

Yeah, run far away from that Cyclone, snag the X1 and don't look back. The S3 had a few problems you may have missed based on your old posts (blown shock, needed a rear tire, rear brakes, grips, pegs and a few other minor issues--still waiting for the new shift lever). Weigh all of that against the cost of the X1 you're considering. No contest.

That X1 looks like a solid runner and there is zero comparison between that bike and the clapped out M2 you've described in your posts. Mis-matched exhaust, more miles, bad cosmetics? Pass.

Yo Greg! That was the one in Los Osos? Yeah, it was raining when I went by there. Went home to research it, and two days later, The strokes happened. So, did you have parts around to handle things? Looks good now.......

I love my X1, even though I've spent far more time working on it than riding it... but that's because the previous owner didn't take care of ANYTHING on the bike. Still, there's a part of me that wishes I had an older, carbed tuber.

quote:

That was the one in Los Osos?

Yeah, I tried for over a month to get hold of him. Don't know if CL had my address blocked or if his friend wasn't giving him the emails. The day he finally listed a phone number, I called him. Bought it the next day.

No, I didn't have the parts. Got a new shock from Ebay. Ordered the brake pads. New tires are sitting here waiting to go on Saturday.

The biggest problem with the bike was the airbox. He was so proud that his son was a Harley mechanic and did all the service. Man, if that's true, the son needs to be kept far from anybody else's motorcycle. The airbox was missing the sealing strip all the way around the edge. On top of it, he had taped over two large breathing holes in the intake snorkel with aluminum duct tape. I guess he thought they weren't supposed to be there.

When I found it two weeks ago, a quarter-sized disk of aluminum tape over one of the holes had fatigued and long-since sucked through the engine! Booger. Pickin. Moron. I hope it didn't do any long-term damage but, it's mine now.

That's what scares me about the M2 you're looking at. There was just no good reason for what that guy did to the exhaust. The right muffler is $50-75 on Ebay. To do something so mickey-mouse to the exhaust just tells me what kind of mechanic and craftsman he is. What other nightmares lurk on that bike?

Why the apprehension about the fuel injection? The S3 runs rock solid and starts right up and the X1 is identical. I also have a 1998 S1W (the same 101 HP Thunderstorm engine but with a carb--in case you're new to the models).

I've since ditched this air cleaner and went to a ham can while I searched for a stock airbox (finally found one). It also got the stock muffler put back and the Vance & Hines removed.

The S3 still runs cleaner and stronger all the way through the range. The S1W has carb issues that I hope the original intake snorkel will correct (backfires through the carb at low-mid RPM when you snap the throttle open and blubbers a bit at high speed). I'm sure it can all be sorted out but, the S3 just runs...and does it well.

Leave the X1 stock and you shouldn't have any tuning issues. The bike makes 101 HP in stock, totally quiet tune. The muffler is buried in that chin fairing so you ain't replacing it for looks. Weight? Who the hell are we kidding?

I'll admit that I don't like the fuel injection because it means I can't zero a new throttle position sensor on my own without buying additional tools. I have to remind myself that if I don't screw with it and just ride it, I probably won't ever need to do that. Since I'm leaving the stock exhaust and intake, tuning the rest of it is unnecessary.

If you want all-out engine performance, a Buell ain't your bike. It's got a really solid mid-range thrust and a nimble chassis; that's the joy of owning one. I've got a gaggle of Buells and if I could come up with any good reason at all for another one, that X1 would be mine already (at least based on the ad and small pictures--haven't looked at it in person).

And just to play devil's advocate: if you truly are a tinkerer and want to modify the crap out of the bike, making yourself your own Harley-powered street-fighter, a carbureted bike is clearly the easier choice. The Cyclone and S1 models won't need aftermarket body pieces when you ditch the air scoop and stock airbox and there's no additional sensors or associated wiring on the engine. I would imagine that carbs are more forgiving to being mildly incorrect with jetting. Fuel injection is surgically precise and without a dyno, is probably tough to tune-out running issues.
