Hi. Just picking up a '97 M2 that has a hole in the stock muffler. Having a hard time finding a replacement for a muffler earlier then '01. Any help out there? Thanks, Bill D.

Perhaps it's something you could just get welded?

On the pre 99 model year bikes the Vance and Hines gave exceptional results with proper jetting. You'd want to be very specific in your search for the right muffler, your's will take a 2" collector, not the later spec 2.5".

Also a muffler for a S1W won't fit your bike unless you add the S1W's header pipe as well...

Just trying to cover all the various scenarios that might come up in your search. Nice looking bike!

I've got one from an S1--would it work for you?

Yeah, you'll need to measure that header diameter to be sure. Is that photo of your actual bike? I'm no expert on the stock exhausts but, that tailpipe looks like the later version of the muffler (99-up).

If you have the 2" collector, I have two stock mufflers here that would work: an all brushed stainless one and a black one with the earlier plain-pipe turnout like RoadThing showed.

I just bought them from Ebay for my S2, thinking I would change to the S1 header. I later learned that the S1 header would interfere with the S2 air cleaner and I don't want to change that.

Hi. Yeah, that's the actual bike.I think he's changed the headpipes to the bigger ones. He used a short piece of tube to sleeve the bigger pipe to the older muffler. I saw that looking at the bike, but didn't understand why the adapter. So it sounds like I could go either way with it. Not as clean as it looks. Only 9k on it, but it sat while he was deployed. Nothing horrible, but a lot of cleaning of surface corrosion on the bare aluminium parts. Some minor derusting and touch up. The good is he's a body guy. Has a full set of extra, custom painted body work {metallic grey}, an extra seat and some other stuff he's dragging out to go with it. I'm an ex Moto-Guzzi Lemans/ Ducati Monster/vintage BMW guy, and I'll this'll fit well into the linage...

You should probably post a picture of what your headpipe/muffler junction looks like. There isn't much pipe on the muffler to add an adapter so that suggests he may have cut a section off of the headpipe to make room for the adapter. In that case, you may need another header as well if you want to sort it out.

Got called off @ work today. Gonna try to get down there and pick it up, instead of the weekend. I'll get a shot and post it. It's a short, stepped piece, necking from big to little.
Also, the lower hanger, by the pipe/muffler joint is missing the ISO rubber. Went to look it up @ American Sport Bike, they say it's not available. There is an updated hanger, tho for $129,00. Is this the sort of thing to be expecting? Should I buy a set or two of ISO mounts while they're still available?
And last, here's the previous ride....

Just get the one updated hanger for now, it's better than the original part, has two isolators, and will help keep your bike in one piece in the future.

The original part could contribute to broken head bolts and cracked headers, although a lot of trouble there can be mitigated through proper install procedure.

Don't stress too much about that pipe 'til you get it "in hand".

Good looking Duck there.

Let me know if you pass on that bike Rocket (I just read your M2/X1 thread). I've got a buddy who will be in CA in a couple weeks and I think that, more than the X1 would be a good vehicle for him.

Not to sway you one way or another, but for simplicity the M2 will be the better one, for power and handling (most esp new swing arm and fully adjustable inverted forks) the X1 will be a good buy. As long as you don't mind injection.

R_t's muffler up there would probably just bolt right on.
