Yes. cap it.
It won't idle properly otherwise, I think.

If this was a Blast, XB, or 1125, I would tell you thats where you connect your carbon canister. I always assumed the tubers had them, I just never looked. Cap it or put a carbon can on it.

Also, it shouldn't affect your idle at all, worst comes to worst it just lets in unfiltered air.

i just capped it in case any unfiltered air gets in there.

It absorbs the nasty gas fumes from the fuel tank and then recycles them into your air intake so they get burned off. Without it, you would be venting to atmosphere and causing global warming and killing baby seals.

Just replaced my throttle body on my '99 X1 after it broke. It never had a cap on it but the new updated one does.

The old one had a cap, it probably came off. All it takes is you have it backfire through the intake once and then away it goes.

IIRC that is the source for the vacuum for the carbon cannister to function so should not be open.

No way!
I Assumed that it would make the engine idle like crap.
The air must come through before the throttle plate then, right?

Mine was missing for over a year before I noticed it. I could not detect a difference after I capped it.
BTW, you can use the little caps they sell for covering the (sharp) end of wire shelves. They come in quantity so you'll have plenty of spare.

I paid $6.95 for a brand new one from the dealer...MSRP used to be like $8.xx.

For the timing cover, wrong thread. Stop making so many damn threads!!!!
