Found this the other day on both front forks. Sadness : (

Looks like the corrosion came from the headlight mounting clamps. Looks like I'll need to refinish those as well as replace the forks.

How is that the end? Are the sanctions corroded or seals no good? It looks like only surface damage to me... Unless it's a show bike I would just clean/sand it off, refinish the headlight clamps and keep riding : ).

The aluminum under the chrome is flaking off so I am just a little worried that it will keep corroding. I wasn't sure that I could just sand it and seal it and it would still maintain structural integrity. The shocks are in good working order though with no seal leaks. They were just rebuilt last year.

You could remove the corrosion and see how deep it goes, if it is not too deep, it could be treated with an acid wash, and alodine. Dissimiliar metal corrosion that probably started from the steel corroding, then there was an untreated, or scratched spot on the aluminium to introduce the dissimiliar action.

Mine was worse and I spent a few hours on the weekend sanding and buffing. Thankless job but they look nice again.

It's not chrome.

It's polished aluminum, under clearcoat.

Corrosion happens when the clear gets a break in it, and water gets in.

On my turbocars, I use naval jelly to strip the clear. Then Mothers polish to get a mirror shine. Then...just keep after it with wax or more Mothers.
