I can understand the running lean statement as the gasses leaving the combustion chamber would just shoot right out without restriction. If there's any amount of overlap with exhaust valve opening and the gas burning, then you'll have no pressure keeping the burning gasses on the right side of the valve (inside the combustion chamber).

This is mostly a logical exercise, not proven fact, but I'd imagine it would cause a lean condition and overheat the valves twofold. Lean will burn hotter, plus no pressure is keeping the burning mixture on the right side of the valve.

Of course, If you wanted to ride around your neighbourhood it shouldn't be a problem. The engine wont get hot enough in that time to damage much of anything.

I've done a bit more research, and I think I'll just try to doctor up the can as much as possible to be on the safe side till I can get another one.

Anyone have any input on the breather?

I kept the old bits when I went to XB rocker covers. So I'm pretty sure I've got the straight breather bolts, no 90 degree breathers though.

PM me if that will work for you and I can put it a express envelope for you Monday morning. I'll pull down my spare parts box when I get home this morning and take a look around.

Nice looking bike by the way.

There seems to be a lot of X1's changing hands lately. I wonder why that is? Or maybe it's just more new owners finding this site.

There aren't many full systems offered for the tubers. Force makes one that is pretty loud. There are a lot of slip on's that work well and don't offend the neighbors quite so much. V&H, Supertrapp, Borla, White Brothers... there's a few others, but V&H seem to be the most readily available. There's some new (blue ceramic coated) headers being sold on ebay by St Paul HD at clearance pricing if your header is shot too.

For posting pics on this site I generally just use the Paint software on my computer to reduce the image down to 18-20% of the original size. To do this open the pic with Paint, then click on "Image" in the tool bar. Select Stretch/Skew and enter new percentages (try 18% to start and see where it gets you) for Vertical and Horizontal. CLick "okay" and save your image under "save as" to preserve your original. It only takes a few seconds to do this and gives a smaller file for posting here.

Didn't have to dig at all. Let me know if you want one, or both if the other is iffy.

There's a black S3 header for sale in MN on craig's list, if your header is damaged. It will work on your bike. The thread is under "S3 parts" or something of the sort, here in the old school section. $50 or so would probably be a fair offer.

OK

Leaky

Yikes

Pretty sure there should be a bolt there.

Too close for comfort? I'm assuming it sits like that because of the re-weld job. New/different headers are definitely on the shopping list.

Stuff like this drives me nuts.

Both wheels have bends, and will take some serious elbow grease to make them shine again.

Pics still seem small to me, but if I make them any bigger they won't work...

Update: I replaced the intake seals, put everything back together, and took it for a ride (sort of) on Saturday. Ran like crap. I'm sure it needs at least the TPS reset, and more. ECMspy is next on the list. Also, the stock can is obviously gutted, so I'm assuming I should be running a different fuel map. I think I'll just spring for an aftermarket intake and exhaust and get it over with.

Also, spark plug wires. It appears that someone tried to make sportster wires work, so I need to track down a set of those.

Ugh, every VW I've gotten my hands on is like this. Wrong bolts in place because they "work" and all kinds of redneck engineering. I almost had to rewire my current bug entirely due to this kind of crap.

Good luck.

Dude! That bike has had a rough life.

Your header will fit close, some folks find they rub the frame if not installed very carefully. Looks like muffler strap and "Z" bracket, among other things, are missing? That would tend to break a header... seeing as the stock muffler is like 157lbs...

chin fairing is missing, hence the missing bolt I would check the timing cup and get a cover on it.

Yeah, it's definitely rougher than what I thought I was buying. Oh, well. I still think I did ok for the price. And I like a challenge...

I've been awol for a while, and life has been crazy. A little update: service manual, ecmspy cable, and d&d slip-on have been paid for and are on the way. The bike is mostly stripped down for cleaning/polishing/preventative maintenance-ing. I found proper plug wires (screamin eagle for a dyna) and the main grounds on the bike were very rusty. I'm thinking the combination of that stuff, loading a proper fuel map, and doing a TPS reset/etc will bring it back to life. I'm hoping, anyway...

But what about the fact that I'm going to aftermarket exhaust and intake?

Smoker.. I recently did an intake, exhaust and race ecm. The race ecm needs some tweeking for sure. I got frustrated, wanted to ride and put my stock ecm back in and it runs fine. Lost a tiny bit of mid-range torque but it runs like a top. I will definitely spend some time tuning it in the future but as far as getting it on the road you should be fine with the stock maps.

I am a newbie like Oldog mentioned.. I am taking baby steps.. Plus I like to ride my bike a little more than work on it. ; )

Hi y'all. Newbie here on the board. I am 67 years old, and have ridden for 53 (yikes) years. This is my first Buell and I LOVE it.

2000 Buell X-1 with 1'st over jugs and pistons, Thunderstorm heads, Andrews cam, Force header, Baker stainless shifter and brake leaver, Carbon Fiber Tail and Air Cleaner cover, Adjustible Dampner, Throtle miser throttle hold, Chrome frame, polished swingarm. Dyno'd 118 HP at the rear wheel.
She hits a really mean lick with the after market Andrews cam. The prior owner was anal retentive about everything in his garage...and my bike has less than 500 miles since pro rebuild and I got it for $3500.

I feel like I stole it every time I get on it so I ride it that way. hahaha

So, Nwrider, those mods aren't enough to get you into a lean enough condition that you're worried about it? I can deal with a little low-midrange loss till I can really get it tuned. I just don't want to lean it out to the point where I'm getting detonation, etc.
