Shouldn't they be able to look up the key number from the VIN?

Yes.

Unless the lock has been previously changed.

You don't need the key number. Write down the vin and give it to the parts guy. Tim (No_Rice) has gotten me new keys using the vin for 3 or 4 Buells now with no problems.

Yes, the VIN will get you a set of shiny new keys.

It worked for me. Then I found my original keys. Then my shiny new keys came in from H-D : )
Spare keys that say Harley-Davidson on them.

You can get a spare key at any good key shop with the key number ...

I would buy a spare ignition and have the old one re-keyed also. I think Al at American Sport Bike has them for $25. But His web site is down for maintenance right now or i would link for you.

Ah! Good idea. Get the key number from the dealer and have a locksmith crank one out for you.
Or did I misunderstand that?

That's strange...I had given my vin to the Harley dealer that I brought my ignition switch from and got a whole new set that don't match my old one...story short, I have two different keys now.

Like I said...if the ignition has been replaced in the past, the VIN lookup will get you the wrong key.

I do not know if the ignition was ever changed. The key matches the seat lock, so I have to assume it was not changed. I guess I will hope for the best!

If it was a warranty repair (like my S2 had before I bought it), they would have replaced the ENTIRE lock set so they all matched.

My bike didn't match the VIN-assigned number, but both the cylinders matched each other. I found this when I decided I was tired of having THREE keys for the bike (ignition/seat, left bag, right bag) and went to order locks/keys for the saddlebags to match the VIN assigned key code.

They didn't match.

So I pulled the cover off one of my keys and presto - it, and my ignition and seat locks, were a different key code. I was lucky in that I worked for the original selling/servicing dealership for the bike, and I was able to pull a service history on it. Sure enough...locks were changed at some point way back. As a set. Before the bags were added.

If you replace any of the locks, you should be able to take the locks to a locksmith and have the new lock rekeyed to match the original locks.
