I just got my frame back from powder coating, was putting it back on the engine & installing the front & rear mounts. The manual says to replace the front mount bolts, it says they are two different sizes, but mine are not. No signs anything was ever touched. I tried reusing to old bolts & one snapped, thankfully was able to pull it out of the engine with an extractor. Anyone know what is going on with this??

The S1 has same length bolts. The manual says that you should leave them in place. If removed they should be replaced by new ones.
The manual describes a procedure: Loctite, torquespecs, fasten-loosen-fasten.

The bolts are 7/16x2-3/4"-14 thread, grade 12.
Head of oem bolts should be stamped F911.

Replacements are pricey($20+) but worth it.
I wouldn't reuse the old ones.

Al should have them.

I got a pair of grade 8 bolts, think that's enough?? The old bolts had nothing on the head, so I'm guessing they were replaced at some point.

NO

About the only bolt that will survive that service is the OE bolt, several have tried all sorts of concoctions and whatzits

what Buell used works best if properly installed

some other points, the clamping surfaces must be machined and be flat if the mount is damaged it should be replaced,

IF you have the cast mount and lost a bolt it should be tossed, get the Billet mount from American Sport Bike and some new bolts if the head clamping pad is damaged in any way, remove the head and have it repaired,

I recommend CycleRama for the work..

failure to follow the suggested may result in further damage to your bike....

There is an on line manual for the S1 not sure what it was,

IIRC mine are torqued to 60 ftlb

the basic
assuming that the metal parts are good and clean

the bolts get red locktite and the washers are lightly oiled, do not get the oil on the locktite

tighten to I believe tight, loosen 1 turn and re torque to spec, never disturb except to replace,

If Guell is willing to part with those bolts get them I did not mention them as they are not available any more...

you can get what should be "those" bolts from places like fastenal and they should be ok, YMMV

I have found on here btwn 60ish & 75ish. The manual I have calls for btwn 100-110lb ft. Which is it?? I am afraid of stripping out the threads in the head. No where in my manual does it say anything about this special tighten, loosen, tighten torque sequence. What is going on???

OK, I need different bolts, but how do I tell the guy at fastenal what I need?? What is so special about these bolts??

You can check the on line S1 manual
as that bike uses that mount too.
I have an X1 the required procedure is tight loose tight to spec, thats how the FSM says to do the deed, I would get the bolts from AL at American Sport Bike yeah they cost more
but it keeps the lights on here ...

your caution is VERY warranted.
i went threw a disasterous experience with those mount bolts which resulted in a broken forward engine mount after one of the bolts snapped (while riding).
something to get right the first time.
i wouldnt recommend not putting oil on the washer tho. the torque is a "dry" torque and oil will change the stretch/torque of the bolt which could lead to overtorque or a snapped bolt.
The Horse, issue #108 May 2011 has a great article about the effects of oil on bolts effecting torque. not sure if its available on-line but worth tracking down.

IMHO, TORQUING COMPOUND should be used on any metal to metal surface on any screw, allen screw/bolt, nuts, washers, and bolts that you are going to torque ...

"i" have only had to replace two FRONT MOTOR MOUNTS ...

FIRST one because "i" bounced of a car in 1998 and the SECOND because the second one was installed by the DEALER per the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL and FACTORY INSTRUCTION SHEET ...

Well, the second one did not last very long so "i" did the THIRD one myself and it has lasted to 110,772.1 miles as of the last ride ...

What "i" am saying is that if installed correctly the OEM Front Motor Mounts will last a long time and that even applies to the AFTERMARKET "HEAVY DUTY ONE"S" ...

Ok just got my manual. It says "Tighten the two side isolator bolts(7) to 100-110 ft-lbs." No mention of any special torque procedure, or oiling the washers. Ironically in the related pic number 7 is a washer for the front iso bolt. WTF??


What is the torque of the rear iso bolts??

I really wanted to ride this weekend, I am getting closer & closer to making a chopper, seems hell of a lot safer!!

I love the bike, I really don't want to kill it. But, I don't need the engine falling out. I wish someone made a new frame with better engine mounting system.

A MECHANIC knows FACTORY SERVICE MANUALS are some times WRONG and miss leading !!!

There is lot of MECHANIC INFORMATION you have to be taught by a MECHANIC ...

The 2000 Factory Service Manual for the BLAST(P3) motor mount to head is 63 to 70 ft.lbs. ...

1997/1998 S3/S3T Factory Service Manual is 100 t0 110 ft.lbs. ...

1999/2000 S3/S3T Factory Service Manual is 100 to 110 ft.lbs. ...

So, IMHO it is up to a MECHANIC's interpretation what is over tightening, just right, or under tightening if the SERVICE MANUAL "WRITERS" put different SPEC's. in different manuals ...

I do not have my FSM here to be sure BUT
I am willing to bet that some one will chime in here, I am positive that the Torque on the "Front motor mounting bracket to head bolts is not and probably has never been 110Ftlbs" its an aluminum part...

I believe that it WAS 75 ftlbs at one time, and that it was reduced and the procedure modified.

JRamsey if you have your FSM handy What is the correct spec for the X1 or S3

The bolts I am referring to face forward as viewed from either side of the bike, and attach the aluminum front bracket to the head, then a single bolt hangs that mount thru the front isolator, BTW if you are worried about the motor falling out dont
there are also several tie rods that secure it to the frame

I wheelie my X1 on occasion and have landed it hard more than once, motor never left the frame.

Buy the bolts from American Sport Bike when you call ask AL how to do it and how tite to secure them
he will set you straight ....

100 to 110 ft.lbs. is TOO MUCH, "BUT" those that BELIEVE what ever is put in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL will "DO IT" !!!

This TORQUE SPEC. will be the same for S1, S2, X1, S3, and M2 models ...

Another way to look at TORQUE'ing is if the component will stay tight at a lower minimum torque amount, WHY TIGHTEN the component more !!!

OK I know some people take the service manual as the bible. I also know these books are NEVER 100% correct. I agree 100-110 ft-lb seems way too high, that is why I started this post. The manual says the same for the front iso bolt. I will try to scan the page & see if I can upload it. I went to HD dealer, they were about as helpful as an ejector seat on a helicopter.
