OK, this is new territory for me because (knock wood) I have yet to blow a transmission. Getting a friends M2 roadworthy, it's his first bike, he just got it, and it's...rough. Everything is adjusted properly, I did a fluid change to put the right stuff in the primary (smelled like it had gear lube in it), took it for a short ride and the issue I had hoped the fluid change would fix...is still there. Pull clutch at a standstill, put it in first, you get what sounds like the "first gear clunk". OK. Let the clutch out slowly, the bike will start moving like it should...then all of a sudden you get a huge CLUNK and it lurches into gear. First gear only. 2-5 are working fine. Shifting is fine. Neutral is as easy to find as any of my tubers. Its just first gear is...wonky. I guess I'm glad it has a trapdoor transmission...but any guesses from the collective? Am I looking at a trans rebuild, or could it just be a shift fork, or something...else? | ||

There is an internal adjustment of position on the linkage that operates the drum, could also be the loose pin / cam syndrome ( pins get loose and the shift cam snap ring works loose. that or the dogs on the first pair are rounded my x1 does that once in a while have you had the primary cover off | ||

Not yet. Changed the gear lube (?) for Syn3 hoping it was just wonky fluid clutch plate acting up syndrome...but no luck. I guess primary off is next step. At least it has a trap door...lol. And no pieces of metal big enough for their own part number came out with the old lube. | ||

I had my tranny beefed up and had the gears back-cut for this very reason. Now the gears pull them self's together when shifting. Mine was doing this and when you would take off from a light it pop into gear suddenly and you would be doing an unintentional wheelie! Then i started getting a false neutral in 4th-5th gear up or down shift. I was racing my brother on his bike off a freeway off ramp that turns into a 1/4 mile straight before the last corner. and we were going about 130mph and i went to down shift and got a false neutral right into the corner. It was scary as hell and at that moment i new the tranny needed to be worked on!! | ||

bright side, if the clutch and rotor come off, you are in position to do the crank shaft seal IMO that bike is about due so I would recommend it | ||

My '95 Sportster was doing that when I bought it, Joe. The dogs on 1st gear were worn. I had put the taller Andrews 1st gear in my RS many moons ago, so I had the old ones in stock to fix it. Problem solved. | ||

My M2 has done that ever since I've owned it. It only does it once in a while so I'm loath to take it apart. | ||

Mine hates to shift into 1st after it has been sitting parked for a few hours. After the first time, it is good the rest of the ride. |
