Every now and then my starter on my 98 S1W makes a sound as if its not engaging all the way or possibly slipping??????? Any thoughts? I just purchased this bike and am in the process of going through it. It sat for a few months before I got it. Battery is said to be new by P.O.

Mine made lots of racket sounds when i first bought it used back in November. The battery tested ok, with this high dollar battery tester we have at work. But I noticed that,if I put a battery charger on, about 30 min before a ride? It would kick over well with no noises.
So, I bought a new battery from Battery mart, think it was $85 and that included shipping and since then? I can let it sit for a week, hit the start button and it fires right up, no clacking or grinding noises. Hope this helps.

Thanks, It just may be that the guy bought a cheap battery?????? I'll put the charger on it tonight and see if that helps. It sounds like a grinding noise.

Mine will do that sometimes if it doesn't fire within about 2 or 3 seconds.

I think what happens is that when cranking, one cylinder may weakly fire causing the starter sprag clutch to momentarily disengage. But it doesn't continue to fire, so the starter spins while partially disengaged causing the loud raucous grinding noise.

My fix is to let up on the starter button at the count of 3 and try again. It always fires on the second round.: )

Thanks Sparky, It does kinda sound like my Norton when the sprag slips on it. But it seems to do it right from the point I hit the button, On the Norton you can adjust the sprag. I need to look at the manual and figure out what to do. It only does it once in awhile, but when it does it scares the crap out of anyone around. LOL.
