Hi all, That time of year where i need to purchase a new back tire, what are your guy's opinions? iv'e been looking at pirelli's and michelin's but not real sure. Also, what size works stock is 170/55/17 but iv'e read that 180/60/17 works? all thoughts are appreciated! Thanks! (Message edited by dano1z on June 12, 2011) | ||

i bought an x1 couple months ago and it came with michelins on it and i like them no complaints. | ||

You've got your numbers switched, hopefully that's just a typ-o 170/60 for the Buell wheels 180/55 for the PM's Those are the stock rear sizes, you can fit larger tires on the rims. If your roads are mostly straight there I wouldn't have a problem doing that. Some cities in IA they've paved over pretty much any wandering cow or sheep trail, I would want optimum handling if I lived in one of those areas (Waterloo seemed like that, Des Moines not so much), and stick to stock recommendations. I loved the way the Pirelli Scorpion Sync (180/55) looked on my bike with standard rims. I really didn't like the way they rode in my local canyons compared to the same tire on my XB, they just didn't handle the same. Some here have really liked the Angles. Your weight and riding style will have a lot to do with tire life. I've enjoyed the Conti Road Attacks on my bike, long lasting, responsive, and good traction (wet and dry). I may try the Sport Attacks before too long. I intend to try whatever sport touring tire in the Avons next on my Cyclone. I'm running through a used set of D208's on it this season, I don't plan to replace them with any more dunlops. (Message edited by littlebuggles on June 13, 2011) | ||

Happy with my Pirelli Diablos... but haven't run anything else other than a bald michelin on it when I bought it. | ||

Just ordered a set of Conti road attack 2 for my x1. found them real cheap at jrgraham with free shipping. hope they live up to the hype. | ||

I ran the road attacks at my first and second track days, had no problem getting a knee down using those tires. The next gen are supposed to be an even better tire. Conti specifies a higher pressure than other makers, follow their recommendations on the tire, they'll handle and wear a lot better than trying to run at the #'s spec'd for other tires. I have had a lot of experience with the continentals. The race attack is better than the road attack and the sport attack on the X1. I have a michelin power pure on the rear right now and it works......It has poor grip under hard down reving and under heavy throttle on very smooth asphalt it likes to spin. I have taken it to the track with this tire on it and it worked fine. I've gotten to the point that i don't care about mileage anymore and i would rather have the grip. I am running enough power that i need a high grip tires. On my ZX10R i was power-sliding up a Solomon S turn because the tires are worn down and they are the continental street attack. I wont be buying those again. | ||

Put the Michelin Pilot Road 2s on my m2 , recommended by a bud that has them on both his Buells . | ||

PM's are polished Aluminum not chrome and are 1/2" wider than the cast wheels. Do they look like these?  They were used thru 2000,'01-'02 the spokes aren't slotted and look like this.  | ||

Dano just so you know those wheels were $950.00 each wheel when they were new. I lucked out and scored a brand new set for $300.00 of fleabay last year. | ||

Yeah, they look nice and allow the more standard sized rear tire. BUT They're heavier and aren't color matched (unless you spend the money to pc them yourself). Then you've got the upkeep, polishing, polishing, polishing. | ||

so since mine look like those they are the PM's so can i put either tire? 170/60/17 or the 180/55/17 but the 180 is the regular size for that rim is that correct? Thanks for the help so far! | ||

OEM tire size is the 170/60 on either wheel. More selection in the 180/55. Both are the same size for practical purposes,depends on the manufacturer. A Dunlop Qualifier 170 is 1/4"" wider than a 180 Pirelli Diablo Strada.........go figure. | ||

Ended up getting the 170/60 pirelli angels and right away noticed big difference in handling and control of bike. Previously had dunlop roadsmarts, huge upgrade. great tire so far, hope to get 10k out of em | ||

10k...on an X1! Good luck there on that one. Maybe if you grandma it around maybe but i think that is wishful thinking. | ||

So why is it that nobody seems to like the Continental Contiforce tires? I have them front and rear on my X1 and they seem to handle well (for my ride style - street), last a very long time and are very reasonably priced. What am I missing? | ||

I don't see them available as anything larger than a 160/60. Do you get a bigger tire? Plus it's listed as a Supermoto tire, maybe that's why the rest of us have not taken notice of it. Might be fun to try on my STT if it comes in a 180. |
