Hey guys I know its not a Buell, but its definitely old school!! I just got this bike on the 1st, its a 57 Panhead. I plan on changing the bike quite a bit, but I know nothing about Harleys...are there any good informational websites or forums out there?? And by the way the wife is tryin to get me to sell my X1 or my 1125...hell no!!

This bike was my dads, he had a stroke about six months ago, lost most of the usage of his right hand. He can walk and is in good spirits, but no more riding for him. The bike was always going to be mine, just didnt think it would be under these circumstances.

Nothing wrong at all with a nice Pan.

If it was your dads, you're aware that you're best off parking it on an absorbent (disposable) mat. They...uh...mark their territory.

Other than that...the basic mechanical geography is very similar to your X1, but with a single cam. Pushrod, single-pin, V-twin.

Very cool. And, best to your dad. Do something for him...pick his brain...find out the answer to "what did you always want to do with the Pan?".

Then...do it. With him, if he can. For him, if he can't. Either way, make sure he gets to be a part of it. A wonderful opportunity.

That is cool..cool..old school! (Dare I say it) I love an old school Harley! I am a Harley guy at heart and just happen to own a Buell. I do like my Buell but there is notheing like an old Harley. The only thing that can stop you on this is your imagination. I enjoy anything that can blow wind in your face...even my wife. Give a little credit..if it was'nt for Harley, Buell might never have been.
My best to your dad.

Josh, neat old bike and + 1 to what Joe said.

If you happen to have the valve covers off check for cracks around the rocker pivot shaft bosses, if any are found there may be more in the combustion chambers between the valves.

Also be sure to keep the head pipes secure on the exhaust spigot as loose pipes will vibrate and crack the spigot off the head.

I repaired a couple sets of these for a local guy last year as aftermarket replacements are very pricey.

To me a pan has a sound all its own as I can tell when he's coming up the road without even looking.

Hope your dads condition improves.

That is a cool chop; apart from maybe freshening up the chrome and a paint job to match the tank and rear fender, I can't really see a thing that needs doing.

Variety is the spice of life.

If it were me, I would just wash it, dry it and ride it. and if it breaks, fix it. In my opinion, with bikes or any other heirloom objects like that, the originality is the main charm and to a great degree, its real purpose.

Nice! I would love to have that. Pans & knuckle heads are beautiful! Variety is the spice of life. Even better that it was passed from father to son. Lot's of good HD web sites and there's the classic/antique section in cycleworld. Also The Antique Motorcycle Club of America http://www.antiquemotorcycle.org/.
Their last show/swap meet in florida was great.

I agree with the opinions above.

It's your Dad's bike and you should either just ride it as it is or do what your Dad always wanted to do with it.

If you want to build a chop with your own different ideas, get another one.

One more thing.

That is a real "chop", made the old way by removing and/or altering stock HD parts.

It is a genuine "old school" daily rider, not some crap aftermarket kit bike.

If I owned that bike the only thing I would change is the aftermarket custom seat.

I would search for an original HD Police Solo seat with springs.

That bike is cool. Really cool as is.
