Ok, where do I begin. We have a 99 X1 that was taken completely apart and powder coated and assembled. I was brought into the mix now for trouble shooting after the disassembly & reassembly.
I am sure I'm going to have one problem after another. So I am starting off with the obvious problems and what I have looked at and tried to do.
Problem 1 is that we have no power running any where on the bike. The main ground is clean and has no paint on it. Where else is there on the frame that needs a good bond for a ground.

"no power" as in...no power? Or no continuity with a multimeter?

No power could be as simple as a bad ignition switch or a dead master fuse.

K.I.S.S.

Start with the basics.

And to answer your question...ANYWHERE a wire bolts to the frame needs to be a good, clean ground. I always go for overkill - frame, star washer, wiring lug, star washer, bolt. Everything locks in place, and the star washers "bite" into the frame, the wiring lug, and the bolt to not only keep it from budging, but also gives a great electrical contact.

No power as in turn the switch on and no power, lights. nothing. All the fuses are good and run continuity.

The key switch to me looks like it might be a problem. I was going to wire around it with a jumper but have not gotten that far yet and didn't know for sure if I could yet. We have a book. But I started off looking for grounds broken wires, & fuses first.

The wiring harness is clean as far as I can tell. But you never know.

Wiring harness ground, under the left rear corner of the fuel tank often gets over looked,.....just a thought.

James, I was planning on meeting you some time. This might be it. I think it is hooked up but will check again tonight.

This may sound really stupid but is the battery hooked up properly? I once had a similar symptom and spent an hour going through the connections, grounds, etc., to find out that I forgot to connect the negative cable to the battery...

The battery is hooked up correctly. I have watched people hook up their battery the wrong direction. Makes for some good entertainment if there are no fuses in line anyplace.

Found the problem. It was a BLACK positive wire that needed to be hooked up to the starter. Everything is fine.

Try going from a life of working on cars and motorcycles...to RVs.

For some *&^#(*&^&(*&#$#@#!!!! reason, travel trailers are wired with the BLACK wire being +, and the WHITE wire being -.

NO red wire.

HUH???????
