I rode in the heat very slowly through a traffic jam yesterday (was going 15 mph through stuck traffic for 25-30 min in Brooklyn). It was fine the whole time, but when I finally got through it and sped back up, the engine started acting strange.

The power from the throttle was sort of throbbing on and off--like if power was cut off for 1 second, and back one second, just kind of undulating (not choppy, more throbby). The engine light was doing a slow on-off strobe at the same time.

The weird behavior stopped completely after 45 seconds--I think I gave it a little more throttle, and it kinda kicked out. Then I backed off the throttle and it started doing it for another 20 seconds. I was actually going up the entrance to the verrazano bridge, so I couldn't have stopped. But it hasn't happened after the 2nd time.

I rode another 30 miles over the course of the evening (after it cooled down) and things seemed OK.

Any ideas what was happening?

That is the ecm stopping you from overheating the motor. Every other compression it will fire the motor and every other it wont. It is normal and as soon as it gets cool air it will fire normally. Don't worry and buy a fan kit.

here is a link to get the fan kit for the rear cylinder..... Be warned though your right leg is going to get cooked from the fan blowing the air on your leg.

Preybird, cool thanks for the links/advice. I wonder if I could build my own kit for less — I've seen pics of a fan kit on a cyclone, but not an X1. Does it mount where the horn is?

TS, not sure what you mean by loaded up, but I did put new plugs in a few weeks ago.
