Rotate the wheel if the caliper is still giving you fits, there's a magic place in the wheel rotation where it will come off. I've not looked closely enough to figure out what it is that makes it a special place, other than the caliper will come off there.

Wait. you don't need to remove the caliper to change the pads!

The pads slip out the back once the pin is removed.
Use the old pads as levers to pry the pistons back in so that that new pads fit.

Best design ever!

I was on a ride once, and every time I hit the front brake I could hear a metallic slapping sound. Just one slap. If I eased the brake on, no sound. Weird. I pulled into a gas station and looked around. Guess what. I left the caliper bolts loose, they fell out and the whole caliper was swinging around completely free. When I grabbed the brake, it swung around and slapped the forks. WAY SCARY.

Took the paint off the rim all the way around. Damn near a whole bottle of touch up.

I just had the front end apart for some reason. New rubber maybe? Can't remember that part, but I got distracted and just forgot to tighten them. I'm sure they were finger tight, that's all. I'll never forget THAT again. Man, if that caliper got bound up or crossed up for some reason and the front wheel locked.....
