OK, found a guy on fleabay parting an S3. Willing to sell me the forks and the rear suspension (shock plus bracket), for $325 shipped. This is so I can "un-low" the M2L.

Of course then I'll need to find a Volcano Gray front fender for USD forks...lol

But does that sound like a decent deal?

Parts are from a '97; going on an '01 M2. I shouldn't have to change trees, should I?

yea you need new triples or bore out the old ones. m2 forks are smaller.

try and get the complete front end if he's parting the bike. fork tubes, triple clamps, axle, and all hardware. your front wheel is the same.

also, someone correct me if i'm wrong, but the m2L used the long shock with short bracket? if that is the case, just get a short shock.

Good luck finding a Volcano Grey fender, you'll have to get one painted (stock Audi color btw).
That's a decent deal.
St. Paul HD on ebay has Showa USD's for $250 new.

I can see the difference between brackets, at least between my S1W and the M2L. The S1Ws bracket just goes "down" from the engine to the shock; the M2L bracket goes down and has a hook to the rear; the front eye of the shock is about 1" further back on the bike on the M2L. M2L shock is 14.8" eye to eye, bike on ground. I have to measure the S1W...might be the difference between a 14" and 16" shock? But, the guy says his shock is 14.8" eye to eye as well...

Maybe I'll ask "how much for forks, trees, axle, fender, and shock bracket?". Hmmm...

the longer the shock is, the 'lower' the bike will be.

if your S1 bracket looks like it goes straight down, odds are it's the longer shock.

funny tho, you say your M2L has the shorter shock and 'hook' bracket, like i said, i could be wrong about what i said up there...

Yeah, and my VIN is 4mzl. I have a buddy's M2 that I'm rebuilding, his is 4mzk. But...I'll be damned if the distance between the lower fork leg and the lower tree isn't the same on each bike (his looks low, too). Same shock bracket, with the hook.

Guess I could fire off an email to Al...unless someone has an 01 M2 parts book and can tell me whether the shock, bracket, or both have a different part number for an M2 and an M2L.

Ok, for trees, forks, axle, spacers, shock, and front mount...he's doing $425 to my door. I don't need to spend the $, but otoh I don't think I'll find a deal like that (including inverted forks!) Again.

Anyone got a 97 S3 owners manual? Wanna send me a copy of the suspension setup chapter? : )

I just hope the wheel spacers on my bike will work with these forks. It just occurred to me - a 97 would have a cable drive speedo. My 01 has a VSS on the trans output.

Those forks are going to be the WP, not the Showa, you do realize, no biggie, just letting you know.

I'm not worried about them being WP. Got WP Roma's on my S2 and WP's on my S1W...they'll be right at home : )

I just had this conversion done on my bike.I spent a bit more & had to hunt down the parts a bit.I would say that's a good value.
