I've been hearing a "rattling" sound coming from the primary thinking may be the chain it hitting the case so I figured the primary chain tension must be too loose. I checked the tension at room temperature and found two tight spots (didn't look for more) and both were around 3/4", may be just a tiny tad less. I then out of curiosity flashed a light inside the case and saw three parallel grooves around 1/8" deep shaved inside the top of the case. I also went ahead and looked for loose spots on the chain and the spots were between 3/4" and 1" but the chain had very little downward movement and the entire slack was from pushing up on the chain whereas in the tight spots there was some downward slack; 1/3 down and 2/3 up. This is the first time I'm fiddling with the chain so I assume that is normal. The bike has about 18,500 miles and the chain was last adjusted by a Buell mechanic at 10,000 miles when I bought the bike. Given the tension appears to be OK, I'm thinking the grooves were caused by loose tension before I got the bike. I'm also now wondering about the cause of rattling sound. Or perhaps it is a normal sound of the primary. No way to compare. I've also read about loose primary nut but don't know how it is supposed to sound. I will take the cover off and look during the next oil change but that will be in another 1500 miles.
BTW, the bike shifts perfectly and I never have problem finding neutral. Just the rattling sound.
Appreciate any tips and sorry about long winded post.

If the chain is so loose that it hits the primary case, it sounds like a barrel of rocks. Actually, you post on the blast forum too, right Kalali? If you're talking about the blast, I've noticed it tends to make more noise than other buells even when adjusted properly.

It sounds like you're fine AND like you're service guys are good. Usually I hear that the service guys over tighten the chain.

IT IS BETTER TO HAVE PRIMARY CHAIN TOO LOOSE THAN TOO TIGHT !!!

PRIMARY CHAIN ADJUSTMENT Class 101, just PM me if you want a copy ...

Get it right the first time and enjoy the ride ...

Not really, I don't. Sorry, should have said I have an X1.
Anyway these motors are noisy so it is hard to say what is normal what is not. Wish I had bought it new or had one of you guys around to compare notes. Fortunately I have a couple of good Buell mechanics at my local dealership. I'll have them take a listen and tell me what they think.
Buellistic you have a PM.

Do an oil change now and have a good look for metallic sawdust.}It is easy to drop the primary case, give things a good flush before you change the oil and check out scenery while your in there. Could be the Detent plate rubbing on the starter ring gear. These things have a habit of coming loose, mine did. If it is loose then your starter ring gear becomes a metal mincer and chews away on the detent plate like a chainsaw.
Pull the primary case and have a look.
If your not confident get it done! Things can go real wrong in there.
