Hi, I recently got an X1 and despite having done a decent amount of reading/searching, I can't figure this out (plus an HD dealership is telling me something contrary to what I originally believed).

Is the primary and the transmission oil on an '02 X1 connected?

In other words, can I drain from either the engine plug above the exhaust canister OR the tube from the right rear part of the bike, AND then refill from under the seat and be ready to go? (this is what the HD people are telling me)

Or do I need to drain from right rear, refill under seat AND drain from bottom of engine and refill above the shifter? (my manual makes me think this one is true)

Crankcase is a dry sump system and the tank under the seat supplies the crank case system. The primary/transmission is separate (drain plug above muffler) and is filled via the 6 inch diameter primary cover

+1 they are separate. Don't listen to the hd idiots. they always think they are right and 90 percent of the time they are wrong. I have learned to fix it or break it for free. Because they will break it and charge you for it! Ask me how i know? I have a repair bill receipt for $1600.00 in tranny repairs that they caused and refused to pay for.

The dealer may have said "They use the same oil" and meant that you use the same type of oil in both, not that they share oil. Trans fill used to be sportrans, but since HD has branded a line of synthetics (from Citgo) they're using it in both primary and engine now.

This brings up an interesting topic. Does anyone know if we can run Amsoil manual tranny fluid in the trans?? They have two types, one for a regular manual trans and one for syncro'd trannys.

I highly recommend Red Line oil for the Primary/tranny. It's expensive but worth it, I only run 28 oz in it instead of the normal 32 oz. Just my two cents but run what you want.

Red Line is good stuff. Just stay away from the shockproof heavy. Red Line no longer recommends that product for XL transmissions. Green gunk everywhere. I believe it to be the cause of my stator failure.

M2T: Use Amsoil 20/50 motor oil in trans...not trans fluid.

The primary and transmission oil are definitely connected, one hole to fill it (through the derby cover on the primary cover) and one hole to drain it (on the bottom of the primary cover).

Your engine/crankcase oil are separate from the transmission/primary oil though. You drain the engine / crankcase oil through the tube along the swingarm (at least you did on my M2), and fill it from under the seat. On the XB's the oil is in the swingarm with a drain bolt under that.

Your engine/crankcase oil is only connected to your transmission/primary oil if your crank seal has failed! : )

Ok, so I'm using the wrong terminology then, that's what may have confused the HD folks.

I thought primary == engine/crankcase, and transmission was the separate thing.

I'm used to boring japanese sportbikes... oil goes in one hole and comes out another.

IMHO, it is best to run the same oil in the transmission as in the engine because if and when the MOTOR SPROCKET "OIL SEAL" goes bad just where do you think the transmission oil/fluid will go ???

If the motor sprocket seal goes bad, the ENGINE oil--which is under pressure---enters the transmission--which is not pressure fed by an oil pump--- resulting in it getting overfull and puking out the trans vent line.

"AND" that is why for "SAFETY"the transmission breather hose should be ran to a catch container because you do not want to get oil on your rear tire !!!

Like you say, it goes all over your back hugger and tire. Leading to a perfect 360 degree rolling donut as you start from the stop sign near the neighbors house.

I gave them my best "I meant to do that" look and rode the last block home VERY carefullly.
