Anyone have any info on the material and hardness used to make a tuber steering stem?

Probably 4040 or that range of material. I would assume it would have to be made for a not to brittle material. have you tested the hardness with a file?

Cuts easily with a file.

I've made many for flat trackers,mx bikes and a few for choppers and used 1018-1026 DOM tubing unless the owner requested different then I use 4130,never had any problems with any of them.

So they are not hardened then. Yeah I have made to front neck tubes out of DOM but never made a steering stem. I machine parts for "Chopper Guys" and CPI (California Performance Iron)in Vallejo on and off.
