Good news is that I found out what the chirping sound was:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/620928.html?1300152688

The bad news is that I'll be buying two new bolts to mount the front mount back on. : |

At least it gave me an excuse to pull the front iso off. It's shagged. It'll get replaced at the same time.

So, what was it? You still never answered that part lol.

You should spring for the NHRS front mount...

I think the chirping sound had something to do with those two bolts I had broken off in the front of my motor. : |

Was rolling and hit a bump and crack. Knew something was wrong when my M2 turned into a jack hammer.

You broke both Bolts! Wow! That could have been a Dangerous situation! If you have trouble removing broken bolts, I went to Sears and Bought a Craftsman Extractor (looked like a fat tooth pick) and it worked like a charm!

Ft if the mount points on the head are not flat, smooth, and aligned, the head needs to come off and go to a machine shop for machining, the clamp is critical

I recommend CycleRama, they did mine when the left bolt broke, also check with Pammy Before you do the grief of extraction
they can possibly remove them much easier
not likely to miss the hole as doing with hand tools.

I wish we could still get those bolts don casto sold, his supplier stopped selling them in small quantities.

I don't think anyone has snapped one of those bolts

One bolt was snapped off in the head, the other snapped off with about 1/2 inch sticking out. I was able to finger remove the one. The other one came out with the drill bit from the easy out kit. I didn't even need to use the removal bit.

I was lucky that neither was fused to the head. The iso was thrashed. Bottom half was about 1/3 sheared.

I think it was a combination of deteriorated iso mounting allowing more motor flex. When I hit the bump, it was the perfect storm and sheared them off.

The head looks perfect. No deformation or impact. The valve cover had to rest against the mount while I limped it back home. I was close, so it didn't get much abuse. All in all it could have been much more catastrophic.

Those bolts most likely break because of a bad iso. My S3 came with the left-side bolt snapped off and the iso was bad. I replaced with the -87D part (I can't recall the full PN) which is much more robust and haven't noticed any issues. I've put about 8 or 9,000 miles on the new iso and bolts.

Yeah, I suspect the iso fails before the bolts do.

Luckily, the way mine snapped, the hanger remained unharmed. Unless there is torque damage to the hanger that I can't detect until I install the bolts, it should be a fairly inexpensive repair.

Fatty,
Check the faying surfaces on the head very carefully like Olddog said. They must be flat an both in the same plane.
Same goes for the motor mount. I'll bet you find a slight rocker (top to bottom) on the old motor mount and possibly the head.

Could always be worse. I landed a wheelie and had the boss rip off the cylinder head, breaking the bolt on the other side.

The only good news was being able to buy a set of XB style cylinder heads for a steep discount.

The bracket

the bracket

the head

for your safety if this condition exists
on the head mounting surface repair the head
glad that you were able to extract the bolts, mine had to be welded up and re threaded as the drill drifted into the head
I would not re-use the mount either
if you have the money to spend buy the billet mount from American Sport Bike you can probaly get a deal on the bolts thru Tom.

Both the head and mount are flush and untouched. When I check the mount surface on a flat surface, it has no wobble. It appears unwarped.

The real test will be when I proceed with screwing the bolts in. If they go in smoothly without binding and if the surfaces mate cleanly without any daylight, I'll count that it's good enough to get her back on the road until I can save my shekels for a better mount.

I will have to see if I can get the mount done in brushed rather than polished. Don't like the polished.

The new iso kit uses smaller bolts, I wonder if that is so they will fail before the bracket mount bolts fail.

I think the smaller bolt is to allow for more rubber in the isolator.

I think the two head mounting bolts will always fail before the main bolt.

Drag specialties sells a direct replacement with harder rubber I have had no issues with the mount since other than a little more vibe

FT you just did rear isos?

Sorry but I am new to Buell, is the ISO bracket the one at the front of the engine? Mine is a billet machined one. A Mechanic told me it is an after market bracket and good.

Gmaan:

the billet bracket is much better than the cast OE part

yes typically the front rubber mount hanger is refered to as the iso mount, how ever there are 2 at the rear ( rubber mount ) that are called isos.

There's nothing wrong with the OEM part by the way, the billet bracket started out as a way to put XB heads on a tuber, not as a replacement for an inferior part. But yeah, the billet part is stronger.

The new Iso is different. The internal diameter of the through shaft is smaller (smaller bolt) and the previous "D-washer" is now an integrated item.

It's also a different shape from the original.

I've suspected that my front iso was toast for a while. I'll be interested to see how the bike feels with the new one.

After all this discussion (and wondering about some different noises) I remembered to look at mine. I have one bolt missing!
