Hi All

I see there's been a few recent posts on catchcans but here goes.......

I’ve owned my 2001 X1 for just under two years. It’s my first American experience in motorcycling. It’s a good fun bike with lots of character and I’ve enjoyed working through its various idiosyncrasies but need a bit of advice on this one.

The X1 already had a Forcewinder intake and Vance & Hines pipe installed when I purchased it. I understand that these modifications can increase the amount of oil mist being expelled from the rocker box breathers. The oil mist is currently feed back into the air cleaner via the standard Force breather kit. All the pipes run ‘downhill’ on their way to the air cleaner making good use of gravity. I don’t have all of the original fittings or hoses from the stock breather set up but looking at the manual I can see the with the original air box the plumbing looks all down hill into the snorkel.

I’ve read all the cases for and against catchcans but have decided to install one as I’m just sick of seeing the excess oil mist dripping over the right hand side of the bike.

Before I purchase a can I’ve searched the Net and looked at various spots that people mount a catchcan on tubers (with a breather attached to the catchcan). These include:

- Front muffler mount (American Sport Bike type option) (upright mounting position)
- Right hand side of the frame near the battery (almost a horizontal mounting position)

- Left hand side of the frame up near the front cylinder (angled mounting position)
- Using the existing horn mounting position and repositioning the horn (upright mounting position)

The first two options can be easily used with the existing Forcewinder ‘plumbing’ which make use of gravity to help the oil mist drain. At this stage I am only considering the right hand side frame option and then attaching a hose to the extend the drain point to a better position, probably near the oil tank drainage point.

The second two options on the left hand side of the bike seem like much neater mounting options but don’t make the same use of gravity as the pipe to the catchcan must be feed from where the breathers exit the rocker box UP and OVER the motor and then into the catchcan. I understand after looking through the manual that there the umbrella valves probably don’t allow the oil mist to drain back into the rocker box but gravity is not being used. This doesn’t seem like a good idea.

So what are the issues (if any) with the up and over the motor routing of the hoses to the catchcan?

I am currently leaning towards putting one on the right hand side near the battery and letting gravity to the work.

Any advice on the pros and cons of where to mount a catchcan on an X1 would be appreciated.

"Front muffler mount (American Sport Bike type option) (upright mounting position)"

This is exactly my set up. Has been working perfectly for the past 3 years.

You can get a nice billet catch can from pegasus racing for about 20 bucks. I have my mounted on the left side bottom slanting frame rail by the front cylinder. Works great.

Well I’ve come into possession of an XB catchcan that someone no longer wanted and I thought I’d have a go at using it.

I’ve attached it to the existing Forcewinder pipes into the catchcan inlet and it’s all downhill in the catchcan inlet. I’ve then routed to the breather pipe straight back into the air intake.

It all seemed to go together easily with the addition of a couple of P clamps which I hope do the job despite being relatively close to the exhaust.

Even thought the XB can is meant to be install upright there’s a slight angle and the position of the petcock means I should be able to drain it all without having to park on a hill.

Anyway, it’s the least obtrusive set up I could think of. I haven’t been able to test it out yet due to it being a rainy weekend so the first ride is now a week away at best.

Any view/issues anyone can see with set up?

I'm mounting mine to the down tube above the voltage regulator. Although it will be an "up and over" routing of the hoses, thus far my catch can, a repurposed NOS energy shot bottle with a hole drilled in the top, has worked perfectly.

The only issue I have now is that I have to leave enough space around the hose to keep the bottle from blowing off or the hose blowing out. This allows gook to splash up through the opening and mist my leg and left side of the motor.

I have ordered a catch can. We'll see how it looks and works.

I got a K&N-clone mini filter for about $2.50 at O'Neal's in El Sobrante, and a small plastic bottle from REI Coop, for about $1.50. The tubing I already had, and the banjo bolt things on the heads. I ran the two hoses from the heads straight up over the heads, and down to the left side under the tailpiece. The catch bottle's zip-tied to the frame, just underneath the battery, under the lowest downward swoop on the side of the tailpiece. At a glance, one would never notice it, but the bottle is just enough translucent I can see the Splooge level (right now just under 3/8".)
Supposedly hoses straight up from the head outlets is the least desirable from a gravity standpoint, but it sure hides the hoses. The small amount of Splooge in the catch bottle is evidence that it works at least a little bit, even though perhaps less than optimally. And one has to really look for it to see any breather setup at all. Cost about $4. I was hoping to sell my billet, K&N-filtered one (from American Sport Bike) but now they're on ebay for $20. So, just keep it around for a while.

That is going to melt the rubber mounting grommet things. And how are going to drain it? That is a mess waiting to happen. That will never fully drain mounted like that.

Well I pressed on with this set up and can now report back to you after about 1,000km of riding.

The rubber on the P clamps are still as new. There’s enough clearance from the exhaust, more than it looks on the photos and the rubber hardly gets hot at all.

Yes it doesn’t drain fully despite the angle of the frame but park it on a hill like my driveway and you get nearly all the goo out of it.

It’s easy to access for draining. At home I drain it directly into a glass jar to keep an eye on what’s coming out. On trips I’ve drained it into a takeaway coffee cup etc and I keep a small container under the seat with the tools if I ever get stuck for something to use.

So all up I’m very happy with this set up. It looks good and blends in with the bike, it makes use of the existing Forcewinder pipes and the breather goes back into the existing hole in the air cleaner.

But more importantly than looking good it’s functional and serves it purpose well. So in the end despite a few doubts it hasn’t turned out to be a mess waiting to happen.

Mine is mounted under the bike on the right side, hung on a bracket from the front bolt of the swingarm support bracket/pulley cover. The hose routes up behind the pulley cover where the other oil lines are. It tucks in nicely.
