If you chuck the black plastic bodywork, you can certainly run a Force intake.
I have the now discontinued Buell Pro Series carbon job for the S3 (part no. 91422-99Y) on my X1W and it works great on that model.
If you want to keep the black pieces, Buell offers a replacement K&N (91420-99Y) for the pleated paper unit.

just bought my Force Intake for my X1WL, i will post pics when it comes in (UPS tracking says sometime wed or thurs.) I also lucked out cause their price on the webpage is different than the cart price ($20.00 more in cart) and they gave it to me for the webpage price. And i happened to get Johnny (owner) and he is sending the White Elbow FREE OF CHARGE!!!! how cool is that? I will post the pics of my bike when then force is on and the bike is road running.

Any idea if a Pro-Series carbon air cleaner for the 97-98 S1/S3/M2 could fit an X1? I figure it would need some mods because it's meant to go on a carb, but they'd be fairly minor mods???

Gixxer851,
Funny you should mention it as the wife just bought a digital camera. Let me get the R90/S fairing with smoke windscreen on it and I'll clean it up and post a few pitchurs which might give you some ideas.
The only thing that you might have to do with the carb filter is to drill a hole in the backing plate for the IAT sensor. If you get the filter kit for the injected models and want to run the oil mist into a puke can, a car tire valve fills the oil line hole perfectly.
You really want to do the whole Pro Series kit and do it now before the supplies all dry up.
Just think, with your new Pro Series set up you'll soon be drilling out stainless steel cannister rivits because the cheap packing all blew out.

oh one can only hope... hhehehehehe

the whole disscussion on the force vs. pro series i found is this.

They preform almost just the same. It is all about personal styling. I personally like them both, but the carbon fiber isn't my thing, and the force with that white elbow, well lets just say it.... AWESOME! just my 2 cents

Thanks for the tips guys. Steve - I already have the pro-series header/muffler, and the packing is definitely gone already! Man it's loud... too loud... I made up a baffle to go in the end, but it vibrated out on the motorway - back to the drawing board!

I like both the force and the pro-series style intakes, but they both seem pretty expensive if you buy them new... I'd just like to get rid of the airbox, and put something functional but nice in its place. You guys have done that - what did you use for tank accents, the ones from American SportBike? Are there any alternatives?

How about some X1 White Lightning pics in the pics section??? I need some inspiration : )

Will have pictures for you Monday night. I went with the American Sport Bike carbon accents although they do offer fiberglass ones as well.
While I think of it, my knee is right into the Pro Series cover on the S3 so I'm going to revert back to a Force filter but no such problem on the X1W.

I have a new in box S3 Pro Series air cleaner kit that I'd possibly let go if anyone is interested.

Email me if you are.

Lemonchili_x1,
Put some shots in the Cool Buell Pix section but here's one final one. It's getting there slow but sure. Really need to finish up the cosmetic stuff and then do the XB front wheel and forks.

Been working on the X1W the last couple of nights - the rear mudguard is now gone, and Steve you were right, pro-series muffler had zero packing in it... explains why it was SOOOOOOO LOUD! At least I didn't have to drill all the rivets out 'cause half of them had fallen out already....
Going for a long ride tomorrow if it doesn't rain - woohoo!
cheers,
lemonchili

Hey Lemonchili, nice X1W!
I have a used 99 S3T I'm thinking about removing the fairing and mounting an X1W Headlight in it's place and mounting a superbike bar. Do you have any idea what I might run into in the process? Will my gauges fit an X1 dash? Thanks, Cactus

Jack,

Your tach and spedo gauges will fit into a X-1 dash, you may need to get a different top clamp for your bars to be able to mount the dash ( I believe the S3 dash mounts further up into the fairing???). You will also need to get the headlight bucket and brackets from an X-1 as your stock setup will not work with the X-1 light. I will be removing my light and brackets very soon to install my Eurocomponents fairing. I just need to finish up with the fiberglass work and send it in to paint. If you can hold out for about 1 month, I can make you a deal on the parts you need to include the correct top clamp. The only other part you would need would be a screen as mine is promised to a friend's bike.
