I just installed a race kit on my 2002 X1 with parts collected from dealers around the country. I received a race ecm from a dealer in Illinois in a ziplock bag with a Buell sticker/part number on the bag but the only thing on the ecm was a label maker label that says for race use only. Problem is with that ecm the vibration from just off idle to 4k (as high as I took it on the short test ride) is horrible. I put the stock ecm back in and it purrs, stock ecm the vibration at idle is worse than any rpm, race ecm at idle is the least amount of vibration. I searched the board and found a thread with pics of timing maps from stock and race and they look like my timing maps. Any ideas on this? I don't want to run it lean but it is almost unridable with the "race" ecm I have???

Did you reset the TPS?

You absolutely have to.
Then drive it at a moderate speed on the highway to let it adapt to the bike.

+1 on the reset. New computer--new memory. It has no idea what your throttle position really is until it is reset.

Yep, tps reset was done with ecm spy. I didn't run it on the highway because it felt like the timing was way off and I didn't want to hurt the valve train.

"it felt like the timing was way off and I didn't want to hurt the valve train."

So how did the bike feel after the TPS reset? Less vibration, more vibration?
What makes you think there is something wrong with the timing?

I performed the tps reset prior to posting. Prior to the tps reset, with the stock ecm, the vibration seemed normal, more vibes at idle than any where else. When I put the race ecm in, I did a tps reset before I started the bike. I rode it for 10 or 15 minutes around town and it vibrated my teeth! At idle was the least amount of vibration. It runs like it's out of time, not enough/too much advance. What else in the ecm could cause a vibration from just off idle to 4k? I put the stock ecm back in, did another tps reset and it runs fine, smooth on the move and dances on the kickstand idling in the driveway???

I'd say you purchased a piss poor re-flashed stock ecm.

The race ecm's are silk screened boldly "FOR RACE USE ONLY" in white letters.

I just read the "labelmaker" race ecm thing. I second what Jramsey said

I wondered about that, that's why I mentioned it. I thought I read somewhere that most of them were silk screened but some had the label maker sticker??? Anyone have a good copy of the race ecm maps? Probably would want the eeprom data also.
Thanks guys for the info.

Send me a PM and I'll send you the Race maps. I do however recommend against loading the EEPROM unless you are sure you have the same exact firmware version.

Thanks Carbon. Mine is definitely not stamped, it's a sticker. I received a copy of the fuel maps from Kalali ( thanks K!) but the timing maps were corrupt. Does anyone have a good copy of the race ecm timing maps or can someone compare stock maps with a race ecm timing maps? Thanks for all the responses and help so far, I've verified my fuel maps are the same as the ones Kalali sent so I'm half way there!!!

Perhaps the race ECU has a bent pin in the connector?

Ok this gonna sound weird! Take the ECM out and smell the black side connector and if you smell burned plastic or a burnt wire type smell the ECM is shorted out. Mine shorted on the o2 side of the input\output pins.

Keep in mind there are whole lot of data in the EEPROM other than the fuel and timing maps that can (and usually will) get messed up if the firmware versions don't match when someone loads the EEPROM from one ECU into another ECU. Reading your original post and questions around the authenticity of the Race ECU, I wonder if that's what happened. If it were me, I would just load the Race maps (not the EEPROM) onto my stock ECU and call it the day. Keep your new "Race" ECU as a back up (in the garage drawer).

All good stuff gents, thanks for all the input. No bent pins or burnt smell (I hate that smell when you let the magic smoke out!)
Kalali, good idea but I'm going to go about it a little differently, your suggestion gives me a back up that will run but it will always be questionable. I'm going to load the stock timing tables into the "race" ecu and see if it cleans up or if as you said the eeprom data has turned it into a brick...

Thanks again.

Hey guys,

I have a related question, I'm thinking of getting a race ecm but am wondering what do I need to do when I install it?

I know you need to reset tps but is that it?

Also, since you need to (at least) reset tps, do you need to get an ecmspy or just do it at the dealer and if you need to get the ecmspy, do I even need to get the race ecm at all, should I just get the ecmspy and mess with the stock ecm?

One more, is race ecm from 2000 X1 compatible with 2001 X1?

Thanks and sorry Stocker for the slight hijack but at least this will bump the thread on top.

You really don't need to buy a Race ECU if you have, 1)ECMspy software, 2) ECMspy cable, and 3) Race fuel/timing maps.
If you have access to none of the above, then you'll need to get a race ECU and have the dealer reset your TPS. I've never had the dealer do it for me but my local HD/Buell shop has a $60 minimum labor charge. Ironically that's about the cost of a good ECMspy cable.

Thanks.

That's my issue, I'm sure they're going to charge that $60 or something for it but then if I'd go and buy the cable etc. which defeats the purpose.

But from reading posts about ECMspy, it seems somewhat complicated so that's why I'm leaning towards buying a race ECM.

How complicated it really is and what is the best place to get all of those three items.

I am in need of the EEPROM data etc for the race ECM for ECMspy
anyone able to hook me up?
One person emailed me something, but there was nothing in it, nothing i could load through ECMspy

"How complicated it really is and what is the best place to get all of those three items"

The only thing you need to BUY is the cable. I also remember reading that some folks who bought the cable from e-bay also got a copy of the software along with it.
As for the maps, let us know when you get the other items and I'm sure someone here can get you the Race maps. As for the complexity, read the Tuning Guide (which used to be posted on the ECMSPY website) and decide for yourself.

We have a winner!!! The timing maps loaded into the "race" ecm have the X1 purring like kitten. Thanks for all the help, now I get to tackle a leaky primary...on another thread.

But if the bike purring like a kitten then there is something wrong with it. It should be vibrating with exuberance. Just kidding...

OK, my small running problem just got worse and since it seems there bunch of guys here with knowleadge, this seems best place to find a sloution.

I ordered the ECMSpy and also (accidentally, I had it set on esnipe), a used Race ECM from eBay.

Pasty weekend I rode to Key West (170 miles) and bike was running pretty good.
Yesterday when leaving from work, had a bit hard time starting the bike, it started but had problem idling (never had this before).
Then got it going, rode home and it was ok.

So...
1st I hooked up the ECMSpy just to see what it is. Didn't do anything except looking and noticed the AFV was 151 (probably since I have intake & exhaust but stock ecm?).

I then installed the Race ECM, resept the TPS, started it and took it for a test ride.
Bike was running similarly as before but even worse...
It ran on low revs like it's running on 1 cylinder only. Only when I add more throttle, it would run semi ok.

I then installed the stock ECM back, reset the tps and started it, ran really bad, even worse than with the race ecm...

Put the race ecm back, reset the tps, also AFV to a 100%.
Started, and bike is now running even worse. It's basically unrideable, runs on one cylinder and really don't even idle.

WTF?!?!

Should I try what Stocker above did and load the timing maps to race ecm?
By the way, where did you (Stocker) get them and could you send to me?

If not that, what?

Bad TPS? (Cam sensor was changed at the dealer when I 1st had problems and that got the bike running ok, although not perfect)
Bad O2 sensor?
Intake seals?

Help!

I suggest you double check your TPS reset process by visually making sure the throttle plate is fully closed when you reset to zero. The other possibilities might be corrupt fuel/timing maps.

Thanks,

I'll take off the air cleaner and check.

What can I do with the corrupted maps?
My original ECM was ok before I changed to Race ECM but now that runs horribly also.

I got some maps with the ECMSpy, should I try to load those to the race ecm or?

Also, shouldn't the engine be warm when that's done or can it be cold (it doesn't run so I can't warm it)?

Thanks!
