Hi guys, I'm having a problem with my m2. I have a phantom oil leak that not even the dealership can find. I've already had the rocker box gaskets replaced, and that cut down on the leakage, but it still leaks pretty badly. I know it isn't the intake, but it sprays down the right side of the bike, onto the tail, coats the front side of the oil tank, and pools in the low point by the starter. I have no idea where to look at this point. Can anyone offer any advice? | ||

I'm running the buell carbon fiber race intake. The breather system appears to be custom made by the previous owner. It is two pieces of transmission cooler house that join right over the rear head and run back to the tail, where the catch can is strapped to the sub-frame. I can post pictures when I get off of work, but there isn't any oil on top of the head where the y-adapter is. | ||

Here are the pictures, maybe this will help.    These two are of the rear cylinder, I circled the spots where the oil is in case it's hard to see. There's also kind of a fine mist of oil all over the top end, on the bracket that holds the choke cable, the oil filter, the battery, and the starter.   | ||

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I just realized that I haven't been getting any spooge of my catch can as of late. | ||

oil leaks on the black components can be hard to trace down especially the smaller leaks. One trick I've found to be very helpful is to clean everything completely dry with your choice of brake or contact cleaner and use compressed air and or paper towels. This may take several applications to get all the oil residue out. Then use a white spray foot powder like desenex and spray all the suspected areas white with the powder. the smallest leaks will show up quickly in the white powder and are easy to then track down. I do this static without the bike moving but motor running. this has never failed me and have always been able to accurately pinpoint a leak, even a porous casting leak | ||

I just found it. It was the breather system like Chad22 and Buell_bert said. The spooge was solidified in the can and the tubes, probably because it sat for 8 months. When I took off the mounting bracket for the air cleaner, it had a lot of oil on the backside around the breather holes. It must have been building up back pressure and blowing oil out of the seals. I also discovered that this engine is not the original engine, but that's neither here nor there. | ||

These are the same guys that took a month to do my rocker box gaskets, so it's not surprising at this point. | ||

Thanks everybody for the help, hopefully my new setup (pictured below) will serve me more faithfully. Buellistic- The service manual was actually my very first purchase. Followed immediately by Loc-Tite.  |
