My tach is working intermittently. It works fine for 10 minutes, then it doesn't work. The rest of the bike is fine. What would you do first to fix it?

Check wiring, especially grounds.

Not sure how similar the wiring is, but my X1 did that right before the key switch died.

Start bringing something with you to hotwire the bike in case it doesn't want to start for you at your destination. When it dies (or before, whenever) you might want to get a key switch from American Sportbike. None too expensive and it helps keep a Buell guy in business : )

I have had the tank off the wiring seems to be OK. Everything on the bike works fine except for the tach. It does not work at all now. This is the factory add on kit that someone else added. I have a shop manual, but because the '99 didn't come stock with a tach, there's no mention of it, or any help. Does anyone know the voltages or ohms that the tach is supposed to be receiving so I can investigate it further? I want to rule in or out the tach itself, and move on from there. Since the tank has to be removed to really inspect things it becomes an interesting ordeal.

99's magnetic sensor is on the top rear of the tranny, right side. Some have had luck removing and cleaning metal shavings off the magnet. If it's given up completely it may just need to be replaced.

There's some sort of electrical problem (that I don't understand) that existed in the early part, it had to do with voltage spikes that would kill the sensor. Somewhere in the archives, or knowledge vault there is a tutorial on putting a resistor in-line to keep from having this problem.

My 2000 didn't come with a tach, wiring is pretty simple and just involves putting the pins into the right location on the wiring harness. I do have pictures of that, but doubt they'd be any use since your problem is very likely the sensor itself.

I suggest a search specifically focused in the KV ad/or Old School sections using keywords "tach/speedometer sensor voltage", or "sensor voltage spikes" over a 720 day period or more.

the speedo sensor is on the top of the tranny. the tach is ignition driven
