No. They were all the same . . . from C.E.V. . . . . I think.

However . . . you should take that with a grain if salt as I am a " pompous know-it-all". I read it on the internet.

Well . . let's look

First of all . . . the parts catalog is a common 1996/1997 book. So . . . off I go to page 54 and, sure enough . . you are right . . . they are listed as DIFFERENT part numbers.

Right you are . . . I've not clue what the change was . . I'd have to check with the engineer who did the hand controls.

I'm trying to recall if the pinout changed for any reason on the wiring. I don't recall any cosmetic changes.

"SORRY", but to answer your question correctly by what you asked ...

1996 back used HARLEY-DAVIDSON controls on 1 inch handle bars ... Belive "i" am correct on this ...

1997 forward used 7/8 inch hand bars ...

1996 S2 used HD levers

1996 S1 did not.

You are dangerously close to making me dig out engineering drawings.

LaFayette,
My 2000 M2 has black levers however they are all the same from 97 on as you stated.
One caveat, the 97 and 98 S1's had different throttle assemblies. They totally SUCK to get back together correctly.

Not sure about the 96 S1 either, I've only worked on 97 and up.

Court:

Thanks for the correction ...

The KEY is if the TUBE FRAME BUELLS have 1 inch handle bars it uses H-D controls and if 7/8 inch handle bars it has metric controls ...

Bluzm2:

This is why you'll should pay attention when a up-dates on done on a new model year and if you have a 1997 model and the 1998 model has a new throttle you replace with the newer throttle to up-date your model ...

Now these HARLEY-DAVIDSON Parts technician persons will say that it will not fit, well it is BUELLschitte because it will !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LaFayette, I know what you mean. When I rebuilt an S1 a while back, I changed out the throttle assembly. The stocker was terrible. I couldn't get it adjusted correctly so that it wouldn't stick. Not good!

Well after all this silly debate, why dont you just post up a picture of what your actual lever is? Then we Will know.

(and if you want a bad ass throttle assembly, just get a dirtbike setup, nothing is better than that.)

Get you some levers!

I have never had any issues with my factory throttle assembly! I am not looking for any quick ratio throttle.
