i wouldnt discount the S2.
my 01 m2 with full race kit cant touch my 95 S2...
it may be down on power stock but with cams, thunderstorm heads and a mikuni dialed in right they are pretty darn fast...
and once your moving and getting into the curves, it feels like an extension of your body...
moving it around in the driveway is the worse part of it, top heavy and awkward...
but you dont spend much time in the driveway i hope...

Wow... I hate to say it, but the ST1300 is the heaviest feeling motorcycle I've ever ridden. If it feels to have quicker steering than your X1 then I'd argue that the Buell is either way out of adjustment on the suspension or broken.

{shrug} XL all I can tell you, is Ive embarrassed many Jap Sport bikes during a frisky ride, then offered them a cool drink taken out of my cooler in my left side bag.
My X1 is in perfect condition,looks like its brand new and I keep it that way. Been riding street for over 30 years now, competitively roadraced for about half of them but thats not the point here.
The OP had a concern about the X1 being a "twitchy" feeling bike.
I dont think that it is, I find it very stable. Handles, off of on camber bumps in the road easily with out any course changes even when turning at elevated speeds.
Imput to directional change is higher then many bikes out there,thus giving the feeling of stability.
My opinion to the OP still stands, dont discount the X1 yet.Put a few more miles on it.You just might like it?

That has not been my experience with any tuber (high steering effort). Is a steering damper being used? Are the steering head bearings lubed/adjusted every 10k?

That X1 flat spot is easily remedied with tuning. A properly tuned X1 will stomp an M2 everywhere.

Rick_a.. good question. But nope, just had the front end off the ground for some fork seal maint a few weeks ago. Steering head bearings are just fine, just like they were 26K miles ago.
No steering stabilizer added here.No need for one, as far as Im concerned.
High steering effort? I wouldnt call it high, just maybe higher then a lot of other bikes out there.
Honestly, anyone that has ridden any of the modern sport bikes, now thats "twitchy". Compared to them, our old tuber is stable as a fright train and I like it like that.

You want twitchy, try a Blast. I just picked one up and it's a whole other experience. I've only been riding maybe half a year and I was able to lean that thing ALL the way over. Fun as hell at low speed.

Compared to that, the X1 is a refined, easy to control machine. Very stable in my limited experience.

Having worked at a multi-line dealer that had a lot of demos and allowed trusted employees to ride pre-owned bikes at any time, I have to say that among the best that Triumph, Ducati, Aprilia, Suzuki, and Honda have to offer, my S1 handles as good or better than most, and steers lighter than most all the sportbikes I've sampled. Perhaps a DRZ400SM, SV650, and 675 Street Triple had lighter steering. However, my S1 has a decade of suspension and chassis fiddling behind it, and I can only vaguely recall how it steered stock. With stock suspenders it will leave some to be desired.

I'd have to say that the standard Ducati Streetfighter has the highest initial steering effort of anything I've rode...those things steer like a truck out of the crate. The S model is worlds better. Amazing what a good suspension setup can do.
