I had the original tank on my S1 empty while I ran a Manta tank purchased from a fellow Badwebber. When I sent the Manta out for paint, I attempted to put the original back on only to find that it shrunk .8". Having titled my post "Alien tank abduction" I got a variety of absurd explanations and numerous commentary

Well here are the photos of as many different tanks as I could get hold of. Unfortunately none on my bike but where possible I tried to use the same frame.
First off the tank that seems to be short (Small type had no gas in it for at least 3 years)

Next a small type stored with gas in it

Black small tank fitted to running S1 (not the same frame as other photos)

Then the first manta ray (stored at least a year with no gas)

Next manta ray from a running bike

Finally a manta ray from a running bike (obviously not the same frame)

Conclusion maybe this problem just affects the small tanks?
Next step fit to the bike and fill with petrol and see if the tank returns to shape.

Thats what I'm thinkin since the Manta sat empty for while before installation and the bolt sits in the middle of the slot but they should be made out of the same material

The distance between the bolt hole and the retaining bar (at the front) seems to be longer on your S1 than my ex-Spook S1.

Just an observation. It has obviously been designed not to be an exact fit, so presumably they gave a margin for error maybe in the manufacture process, or maybe it was known that contraction or expansion was likely to occur. Anyway I'm glad I've solved that one for you.

Another tank question.

Would a thunderbolt tank fit an S1? It looks like a manta in the ebay ad.

There were, over the life of the S1, 7 recalls. In all candor, all were pretty simple or had little impact.

They were:

Negative battery cable
Sidestand switch
Fuel tank mounting plate
90 degree vent
Swingarm
Shock
Turn signals

Most may have been minor but some were certainly not 'of little impact!'.

The recalls on the shocks and swingarms in particular did almost irrepairable damage to the reputation of Buell motorcycles over here and the press dined out on them for years.

I spoke to one of the guys who's original WP shock snapped on a dark country lake district road one night and his assessment of the situation certainly wasn't that it was minor or of little impact!

On my own early S3 the sidestand switch decided to cut the engine when I was in the process of overtaking a car on a single track road! Certainly focussed the mind on the job in hand that's for sure! When my S1 did the same thing I just removed the sidestand switch completely (and from every bike I've had since that has come with one as standard!)

Poor service by dealers in sorting out recalls didn't help (particularly here in the UK I think) so to dismiss them as minor is a little wrong I think ; )
