Got the shock pulled to service the bike. Shock is not leaking but is almost 10 years old was wondering if there is anything that I should do to it while it's off the bike? What's a professional rebuild cost these days? Worth it ? | ||

Max, Last year I had the stock shock on my '98 S3T rebuilt by Race Tech and it cost $164.81. The shock was starting to weep oil and was about 10 yrs old so I decided it was time. I removed the canister and spring and just sent them the shock body to save some shipping. The rebuild included a new seal, shaft bushing, oil, and nitrogen recharge. | ||

I may go this route, but can race tech beef it up? i'm a pretty big dude and mine just blew out over the last week or so...I don't mind the harsher ride, but that can't be good to ride like that much. I just don't have the money to spend 600-1100 dollars on a WP or Penske shock, and I won't for quite some time. I swear, its been something new to replace or fix every month since I got this bike... Give it time Gray, many times the previous owner claims to have had work done, when they really hadn't. My bike had something new break (or just need adjustment) every couple weeks at first, but now it's a solid, reliable bike. | ||

If you call up Race Tech (951-279-6655) and explain your situation I'll bet they can come up with a solution. You might need a heavier spring and different valving. | ||

Desertfox: +1 on that. Mine was "well cared for" when I purchased it. In one year I have replaced The Fuel injection system, stator, rotor, manifold head bolts, air filter/intake, rocker gaskets and the wiring harness for the rear light. Now it runs well & is reliable. It just takes time to discover & repair any existing issues once you have made the purchase | ||

You cant blame all problems on previous owners, sometimes stuff just happens. I'm the first owner of a S3, when something goes wrong I dont blame the dealer or Buell, I know it just happens A stator going out - I find it hard to believe that a PO could have damaged that. Gaskets - unless the PO disassembled the motor or other parts that connect with gaskets, then you cant blame them etc etc etc to the original poster in this thread - I've heard nothing but great things about RaceTech and plan to use them myself in the near future | ||

I have to agree with you there Hybrid. In my case though, the primary chain had never been adjusted (there are races in the previous primary case that prove it) nor had the belt. The battery it came to me with was from 2000 as well. Regular maintenance stuff that was neglected. I should have looked up this Racetech option. I could have had a like-new shock by now at far less cost  . This WP better be worth the cash! Come to think of it, does anyone want my old leaker? It's the ~16" one for the X1. If not, I'll probably just trash it. | ||

Blue pipe, It was a little over 2 weeks from the time I shipped it to arriving at my door. That $168.81 included the $17 shipping from Ca. to NJ. Desertfox, Don't trash it put up for grabs in the "Parts" section. I'm sure someone would want it. (Message edited by someday on February 09, 2011) |
