Personally i would take a FI bike over a carbed bike any day of the week!... If I bought an S1... it would be converted to FI right away- lol. I hate carbs!!!!!!!!!!
This is the reason i bought my X1 and couldnt be happier. I have an older 99... first year they came out. I bought it in 08 with 3500 miles for $3200.
I say $3500 is a good price if its in really as nice of shape as you say... You wont regret the FI... get a copy of ECMSPY and mod away!

I've never had to do anything to my X1 for the winter other than trickle the battery.
If the battery is good, it generally just fires right up like nothing ever happened.

Beats me if the stupid Ethanol gets to it this winter though.

...BUT make sure the battery is good before trying to start it.
You can foul plugs otherwise.

I have a heavily modified stock carb on my 95 fatboy and it makes 86 hp and runs perfect every where. The only benefit I could see would be maybe in the mountains at high altitude but to be honest the only injected bike I ever rode was a Honda Blackbird & it was a rocket. Ill give one a try & see I guess. I can fix a stock carb or Mikuni on the side of the road, what do you do when the FI quits ?

86 horsepower from an engine that much bigger than the X1? Don't X1s put out nearly 90hp on average? I don't mean to down on Harley here, because I think they make some nice looking/sounding bikes, but I think they need to be getting more HP from those 1340cc engines.

If I was going on a long ride on my X1 I would probably pack a laptop. That'll fix most anything FI related. The only things it wont fix are component failures (dead temp detectors, broken wires, dead ECM etc.)

Its peaceful trouble free combo, not an all out dyno or race motor. I have put an S&S 124 in a friends Fatboy that makes 130. If I wanted more Id put one of them in it. My 1260 83 Suzuki Katana doesnt run too bad though. If FI is so much more power why is the 1250 production pushrod record holder at Bonneville a carbed 95 T-bolt ? I agree with you on the Harley motors, its called a Hog Tax. 86 aint bad when you start out with 46 hp, which is pathetic.

FI vs carb...it's always the Guys that aren't technologically inclined that stay away from FI. I have a wireless bluetooth adaptor on my bike so I can hook up to my ECM wireless and mod away and troubleshoot with ease. Easier, more efficient, and cleaner then messing around with a carb on th side of the road. To each there own.

You know what, I gotta say peaceful and trouble free definitely make up for the slightly less horsepower. I'd bet the real power maker is how well the heads flow, not FI vs. Carb. (of course, I'm no engineer)

I noticed that alot of drag racers tend to be carbed actually, not sure why that is... but it must work.

EFI is driveability and fuel economy...not ultimate power.

Properly tuned, a carb will perform just as well as EFI as far as driveability goes.

But...computers (EFI) can "think" faster than we can, and adapt to changes where a carb is static, and vacuum-based.

I have both, and have absolutely no preference. I warmed over my old 96 FLHP (80" evo) to 90/90 hp/tq at the wheel...and it was carb. But it never started as painlessly as the Uly or the 1125 does.

And by "painlessly", I mean "without thinking". Even in cold weather, my S1W, S2, and M2L (and even the FLHP when I had it) will fire up with the following sequence - key on, choke out, four whacks on the throttle, start button.

But the Uly and 1125? Key on, wait for light, hit button.

It just comes down to personal preference, that's all.
